Mine Is Longer Than Yours.

French baguette is wonderful. It makes a memorable dinner if it is freshly homemade. The recipe for it is very simple (by French law), however, the making of it is not that easy because of the consistence of the dough.

An authentic baguette is 24 inches or much longer. It is to be round-ish and straight in shape. This creates a problem for the typical home baker.

As you know, I often have crazy ideas. Here is what I do:

Go the Home Depot roofing department and get a few of those aluminum mesh gutter protectors. They are very inexpensive, less than $2.00 each. Shape the gutter protectors a little round, cut it a little shorter with a pair of normal scissors, and you are in business. Oil with olive oil first before baking.

Because it is open mesh, the gutter protector is perfect for making a crispy French baguette all around. You can make it as long as you oven's width, longer if you place it inside diagonally. It is so inexpensive and stackable requiring not much storage space, you can afford to have many for those of you who have a need to make large quantities for big parties or for selling in farmer's markets.
