I am not a drill expert, lol, but you can usually control the speed of the drill by not squeezing the trigger all the way in. Just slightly squeeze to get the low speed. My new cordless does have a low torque setting, but I have used the old corded drill that didn't have any such thing on it. Just a "go" trigger, LOL It does take a bit of time to drill through. You don't want to rush...it isn't like drilling through wood or such.

I have had no trouble finding the glass and tile bit at my local hardware store. This is what they look like. It is hard to believe that this will cut through glass isn't it? Make sure you have the size that will allow for your cord to pass through.

Don't run a stream of water from the faucet on the jar..by adding water, just have a small glass of tap water. I dip the bit in it to start and do that from time to time. If you find the jar to be extremely hot, don't add water then, or you WILL crack the glass.

The odds and ends should work fine. If the candle lamps are in good working condition to start with, you are good to go. If they don't have the waxy bulb, you can buy those seperate, or make your own. I use old mason jars, I like the look of the old glass better than the new.

I can TRY and answer a couple questions . Boy - you and me BOTH hate the thought of using an electric drill with water.
* Shudder* I use my multispeed dremel tool when drilling - I start out slow - just to get the original groove made and keep the bit from bouncing around on the glass,then turn up the speed and let the drill sink through the glass without really pushing it through.I move it up and down slightly while drilling - to keep the water flowing in the hole. (Works for me. My drill bits last a long time.) I also used the drill press to drill a hole in glass( one speed ) and that works ok too - since the drill bit won't bounce or slip around on the glass. I also move the drill up and down while drilling - never force it . Well - that's about all I can help you with ... Someone else will have to answer #4. Good luck with your drilling !!!! :-)

I was doing a search for another post, and I just happened to see this one about drilling a hole in glass.

Here's a trick I learned from a guy that used to make conversation piece gifts, using an old liquor bottle and a piece of wood. The wood was whittled into the shape of an arrow, and inserted into the holes as if it was shot through the bottle, with the tip and tail of the arrow being too large to be inserted into or removed from the bottle.

Making a hole in glass is done with a piece of copper or brass tubing, the size of the tube being the size of the hole you want, and some valve grinding compound which is available at auto supply stores.

You need to make sure that the drilling end of the tube is perfectly flat so it doesn't walk off the surface of the glass. You could also use an empty center fire rifle shell with the end cut off, either 30-30 or 30-06 or whatever you can find. These rifle shells are ideal since the shell is thin brass, and the narrow end should fit into a 3/8 drill, while the drilling end is about 1/2 inch diameter. All you need to do then, is to put a dab of the valve grind compound on the glass where you want the hole, place the tube against the glass and start drilling, adding more compound as you go. The compound can be thinned with a drop of water if you need. If you are having trouble keeping the drill from walking off, take a small piece of wood and drill a hole in it just so the tube can fit through. Use this as a guide to keep the bit in place until it has started into the glass by taping it to the jar or glass or whatever you are drilling.

I ordered a Diamond Hole Saw Set from Harbor Freight Tools. The set includes a 7/16" and 3/4". We used the 3/4" for the glass blocks, and it cut through like the block was butter. I'm sure it work on a bottle/jar too. He put the water in a spray bottle and sprayed the block.
