Made anything with PVC pipe?
Comments (72)I drove through a small town last week where they had these really cool lamp posts down each side of their main street. They had hanging baskets of flowers on each side. The flowers sort of filled in and looked like a solid band of color around the post. So I want to make something similar. A post, painted, with baskets and maybe a solar light , (those tacky ones you see lining a drive way ). Small and round that would sit right in the top of the pipe. Does this sound do-able? How is the best way to anchor the post ? Concrete ? I ran this by my husband and got those rolling eyeballs we all love to see. But I really think I can do this by myself. Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated....See MoreDid the plumber solvent-weld my PVC pipes correctly?
Comments (9)I think you are right. For the best joint you want the primer, and it is required by code. If I paid for a plumber and permits I would want the job done right. The primer removes the glossy surface and lets the chemical bond between the pipes and cement happen. Some choices come to mind: 1. Call plumber and ask him, note left over writing. If he says he did prime then ask him the brand of primer he used. Get some and test your pipe to see if it removes the writing. Or get some primer before and test (test in the middle of a pipe, else you make his joint look better.) 2. Point it out to the inspector and have him verify. Once the job fails your plumber should redo. 3. I would try to pull apart some joints. Seems like you should see more cement oozing out. Require him to use primer with dye for the rework. What that does it not allow him to put dye on the existing joints so they "look right". The purple dye cannot get under the cement that oozed out. My bath remodel I paid for permits and a plumber because I wanted it done right. I wanted it to last for 30 years. In chatting with him he said that the joint is fine without the primer. I did not like that. He wanted to put a P trap under my tub is the kind that goes under a sink, I knew that was not allowed, must be glued. So even though you hire pros you must be aware, and be there for inspections. Tell the inspect you want it done right. Holmes on Homes promotes permits and inspections, still he finds permitted and inspected work that should have been rejected....See Moreproblems putting together pvc sprinkler system. help!
Comments (8)PVC is very easy if you follow the rules but it can be very unforgiving if you attempt shortcuts. When cutting PVC pipe you must be sure to cut the ends square across the pipe, then both the ID and the OD of the cut should be deburred with a deburring tool or a knife to remove any burrs or rough edges. PVC can be cut with a PVC snap cutter, a hacksaw, a PVC saw, a wire saw and in a tight spot it can be cut with a piece of Nylon Masons twine. While PVC pipe is somewhat flexible you should never rely upon that to make a change of direction. PVC pipe should always be run as straight as possible and use the appropriate fittings to make any changes in direction. While we commonly think of PVC joints as being glued technically speaking that is a misnomer. Glueing is the action of attaching two pieces together by means of a chemical which adheres to the surface but such is not the case with PVC. Technically speaking the act of glueing a PVC joint should properly be called "Chemical Welding" because the PVC glue softens both the pipe and the fitting and fuses them together in the same manner as we use heat to fuse to pieces of metal together. Per ASTM specifications you MUST apply PVC solvent/primer to all joints prior to applying glue. The purpose of the solvent primer is to clean the surface and remove the glaze from the pipe and fitting wall, thereby exposing the interior material to the glue for the chemical fusion process. PVC solvent/primer is made in both a clear formula and a purple dye formula. While both types of primer are the same many local codes require that all joints in new construction must be made with the purple dye type primer. The purple color is required so that an inspector can be sure that primer was used prior to glueing. If you have a bad joint the only solution is to cut the bad section out and use a coupling to glue in a new section....See MorePVC cleaner question...
Comments (4)I donÂt know where "ANNZ" got his/her supposed expertise but it certainly was not in an approved Plumbing Apprenticeship. Absolutely DO NOT use that all-in-one type glue/primer for any water supply or DWV application in your home because it is expressly prohibited by code. It may be used for lawn irrigation or storm drain lines outside the home, but then when one is designing a system that is intended to saturate the soil with water no one really cares if you have a minor water leak from a pipe joint. Please note that even the manufacturer covered their tails by placing a bold red-letter disclaimer in the advertising. "No primer needed unless required by local code." The Plumbing Codes state the we may use PVC pressure pipe conforming to ASTM D-2665 for direct burial water supply lines from the municipal water main or well to the structure however the PVC must terminate at the house "main water shutoff" valve not more than 6Â inside the footer wall. PVC may not be used for potable water distribution piping within the structure. Schedule 40 PVC pipe conforming to ASTM D-1785 may be used for DWV piping both within the structure and in the house sewer line. Under the ASTM D-2665 & ASTM D-1785 standards all joints are to be made by means of primer conforming to ASTM F-656 and glue conforming to ASTM D-2564. It should be noted here that the term "glue" in reference to the chemical used to connect PVC pipe is technically a misnomer. The product previously recommended by ANNZ is in fact glue, which connects the two pieces by sticking to both the pipe and fitting surface and filling in the minor .001" gap between the pipe and fitting but the proper method of attaching PVC pipe and fittings is much more complex. First the cleaner/solvent cleans any dust or dirt from the surface, it then chemically softens the glaze on the surface of the plastic revealing the inner core material. The glue then slightly melts the inner core material and fuses the core of the pipe to the core of the fitting in a true chemical welding process thus when completed the strength of the joint is equal to or greater than the actual strength of the pipe or fitting....See More- 15 years ago
