Price Increase - Am I Being Mislead?

I am shopping for appliances (kitchen renovation) and went to the local appliance store everyone raves about. The salesman warned me that I should order my appliances before January b/c all the appliance manufacturers are going to be raising their prices (I believe he said 9%).

Is this true or is this just an attempt to get me to buy now so they can make their year-end quota? I'd hate to be duped, but I'd really hate to pay the increase!

I heard the same thing from a couple of different people. We are trying to order this month to avoid.

It depends on the manufacturer. Several manufacturers increase their prices, some in February and some in June. He is most likely correct.

Zyperiris, the odds were/are so bad with that many around. They are not aggressive which is a plus. I have a neighbor who is afraid of everything. Like if you have a tree she thinks it is going to fall on the house so she cuts it down! Has traps all over for rats, as if the neighborhood is infested, not. I don't thik she has a bug in her yard! When I moved into my house, ten years ago, she told me horror stories of Eucalyptus trees, branches breaking when kids are swinging, roots so shallow they fall over with no warning. My one giant tree is a Eucalyptus! ( I have always figured if something like that ever happens I have insurance! Not the kid falling from the swing, the tree falling down.haha) Can you imagine her hearing me almost daily out there "hah, I knew it(!), egg sacs", torch lighting, "now where are YOU hiding, I will find you...ahah! told you! I knew you were around here". Torch lights again..LOL I can't believe she hasn't said anything! I hope I am knocking down the population a bit for goodness sake! You know what they are like? Daddy long legs, everywhere! Except outside! Whew.

I'm a custom cabinet maker. You can search "rightwise" on Houzz.com if you need to validate my expertise. Like many shops, we outsource our doors to a "door supplier" for larger projects. As a general rule, (in the same wood species) raised panel doors will cost more than a flat panel door. options like odd sizes rails and stiles and applied molding will increase the price. It sounds like your "modified shaker" is a cope and stick door with a basic inside profile and a 1/4" venered panel. One of my suppliers would up charge for the 3" stock, another would not. Even with the up charge, the price would still be below a raised panel option. The only possibility I could envision for an increase going to the flat panel door is that the inside profile is "non standard". I've seen some factory cabinet doors with profiles only on the rails (with square stiles), that would require most shops to purchase new tooling to provide that door. Please post a pic and I may be able to tell if it's a standard profile. brent

a 52 inch aisle is deemed by all to be a great big aisle, a working aisle. And not too tight for a passage aisle either in a walkthrough galley. Plenty of space. I have a 48 inch wide galley walkthrough. oldalgebra are you doing drawers in your 30-inch base cabinets? Looking on the Blum site I saw that they had only one size longer than 21"; it was about 27". So if it's to be Blum's Tandembox drawer sliders, you could have 28" base cabinets to hold them. I think. I know that Ikeafans people in the mods forum have cut down Ikea base cabinets to about 21" deep withotu preventing the sliders from going all the way back to bottom out -- I don't know why there are those unused extra inches at the back. Perhaps in Europe people need space to run their plumbing behind the drawer backs... In any case, in a small galley kitchen this is All Good To Know when you are planning those extra inches for your knees in the aisle. In my kitchen I could have one bank of bases at only 21" deep while the counter on top of it could be 24", and this would make more space ergonomically without reducing the counter surface. oldalgebra are doing a deep base on both sides or on one side?

Its 1 :25 am and I'm with the night owls. I was laid off at 66 and was dispirited. Looked for jobs, not much luck. So I accepted that unemployment was actually early retirement. Less than a year later a friend called about an opening in her agency in my field. It is a great fit: about 10-15 hours a week. I only go into the office (which is 20 minutes away) 1 x 2weeks, nearly everything can be communicated and documented by secure email and text. I miss the chatting life of more collegial time in an office, but I treasure setting my own schedule. As long as my patients get seen on time and my documentation and time sheets are on time no one 'bothers' me. I'm still contributing to society and (modestly) to family income. I have lots of time and flexibility for those ever increasing doctors' and physical therapy appointments. Gotta keep the mojo working if I want to work. My house is still a mess because neither dh nor I are neatniks and actually don't care a lot about "everything in its place". I mean, it would be nice, but it takes so much valuable time! Rouge, your days and nights will take on a shape of their own. You can nudge things however you want. Eventually a routine might emerge. My thoughts are: make new friends, keep up with old ones and participate in some sort of group activity: exercise class, bridge, book group, civic organizations. For me, they are a welcome change from being at home. I came across the seeds you sent months ago. Still in their little envelope, waiting for spring, like me.Marie

Hi: I bought my Monogram range top at the end of January 2008. I was told the prices would go up Feb.1 . I did check to see if there was an increase and there was, but I don't remember how much of one.

Most of the highline brands reset at the end or turn of the year. Gaggenau's just happened, Miele's is about to and SZ/Wolf usually happens Dec/Jan. too.

Not being duped, and if you ask nice they may show you the memo. You can always call the manufacturer too.

I just 'heard' there are good sales in January, and am hoping with the economy that prices will be dropping to move sales. Am surprised to hear of increases. Has anyone noticed any decreases in prices recently?

A couple of weeks ago the appliance salesman at Bray & Scarff's told me that all manufacturers were raising their prices at the end of the calendar year by 10% - 12%.

Who knows if it was salemanship or the truth???

I was told today at WOlf is increasing it's prices by 4.5% Jan 1 2009. I am hurrying up too..

Bluestar raised their prices in Canada June 1/08 if memory serves correct. I bought before then!! :) God, I got such a SWEET deal on mine. Actually, on that subject. Since the CDN dollar plummeted so much lately(which i sooo predicted would happen.....damn, i should have bought US dollars a year ago). Anyway, it *may* be worth it for US residents in or near border towns to take a look into purchasing a Bluestar in Canada. When I purchased mine in the spring(08), when the CDN dollar was at about par with the greenback, I paid less than any price I had seen advertised in the US, and less than any price I had seen anyone on GW or elsewhere publicly admit to paying. Now that our dollar is a good 20-25% lower in value it may be very beneficial to try buying one here. I just thought about this scenerio....I know there has been talk about CDN Costco's having 30" RCS's for $2000CDN...I do remember hearing it has gone up to $2500 tho. But in any case, 2500x.80 is $2000 USD. I am not sure if I should post my price I paid for my 48" RNB, but if you could buy it anywhere close to what I had paid and factor in the current exchange, your head would spin!! lol

Appliance manufacturers do their part in fighting against deflation. Let's all contribute.

Are any of you going to your employer and reducing your salary requirements because prices are going down? How about the profesionals, reducing your hourly fee or cost of an office visit because currency rates for the Dollar are more favorable now? Don't think so.

Don't act so indignent when appliance or other firms raise there prices. The marketplace and pricing is not as simple as the roadside lemonade stand you ran as a child.
