Am I being manipulated?

Recently, I read about how one should be careful not to let KDs and GCs talk you into something that may be easier for them to accomplish, yet contrary to your wishes.

I am asking for 30-inch base cabinets and 15-inch uppers and I was told in a rather condescending voice, "Do you really think you are going to be happy with 1 foot less of space?" With the extra counter depth, I will have *only* 52 inches of walking/working space from side to side in my galley kitchen.

Again, in the same visit, I was told that the floors should go in last and I thought I remembered distinctly reading a post that suggested flooring should be put down before the cabinets go in. I believe someone couldn't open her dishwasher because the flooring was too high.

Can you help me on these two points? If they're right, OK. (Actually, I don't care about the floors so much, but I never seem to get a straight answer about anything.) But if not, I fear these guys are very good at manipulating me. (I'm so unsure of myself, having never been involved in a process that seems so complicated.) They don't come right out and argue, they just say things like, "You realize, don't you, that . . . " And of course, I didn't realize, so I reverse my decision.

So, (1) Will I have enough room if I increase the lower cabinets and (2) Should the flooring go down first?

Thanks.
