There is a pattern by Gloria, Inc. (I think) before the days of 'Pat and Gloria' that is adorable. I saw it once a long time ago. It was a part of the Garden Gang. Good luck!

Southern Peas are 99% self-pollinating before they open so you won't get what you are looking for with bees in a screen cage. They are easy to hand pollinate. I have a bunch in my greenhouse now just a few days away from harvesting the pods. In a greenhouse or a garden, you have to emasculate the flower a day before it opens. Then the next morning take pollen from a freshly opened flower and pollinate the emasculated flower. In a garden, you will need to cover the stigma with a straw or tape the flower closed to prevent unwanted pollen being transferred. In two days you will know if the cross took as the pod starts to grow. Contact me if you have any questions. Here's a great link detailing the pollination technique. difference between sweet pea and edible pea?

I've found out now as I have both growing. The pods on sweet peas are covered in downy hair and if you touch them and lock your fingers there is a bitter taste. Edible pea pods have a smooth skin and there is a flower but it's not the main event.

Yeah, Last year was the first year i got a decent amount of ripe red fleshed watermelon since i can remember. They were somewhat overcrowded, so many of the fruits were small, but that's okay for me. It was originally a collaborative breeding project with Joseph Lofthouse in Utah. At this point the two populations are basically the same, but perhaps more red fleshed in my population since he has since started only planting seed from the yellow ones. I do plan and would like to start sharing my strain as widely as i can in Colorado if it continues to do well. And for those of you eventually get some seed please continue to share if you can. But in the meantime you can usually get some seed from Joseph of his if you like. (garden.lofthouse.com). I will try to take some pictures this year later in the season.

No, there are no pollinators in my climate that are attracted to pea flowers that i'm aware of. In theory i suppose a bumble bee or some such could rip apart a pea flower or two, but 1. That would be rare and i have never observed such and 2. the pea flowers self-pollinate LONG before they open, so there is virtually no chance of them ever crossing naturally. Not to say impossible. Though since these are breeding peas, any naturally occurring crosses would be welcome actually. (For those who have never heard of it, this is a gene that ups the pea's content of beta carotenes to the point where the insides become bright orange, like the color of a red lentil.) So, Orc gene peas have orange (or pink?) cotelydons. In theory these could be more nutritious because of higher beta carotine. This is the first year growing them. I just finished a picture for my twin grandbabies that was called Two Peas in a Pod Cross Stitch. I got the pattern off Ebay and it was in an old cross stitch magazine. It has the saying, "Like two peas in a pod, twins are a gift from God". It has two babies in a pea pod. I don't know if this is what you want, but if it is I can try to get a color copy made because some of the stitch symbols are colored.

That is from an old cross stitch and country crafts magazine but I forgot which one has I have given my copy away. Do a google search for the cross stitch magazine database and you can find what magazine in there. Mary

Hi bevmontgomery - I used to have this pattern and made it for a friend back in 1992. Can't find it now and would love to make it for a friend who's daughter is having twins in November. Could you get a color copy scanned or something similar to email to me? That would be terrific. Thanks for your time.
