My unneed saga continues. I cancelled the order with the guy trying to sell me electrical work. Instead went to a better place a friend refered me too. The new seller says a 3 wire is standard as you guys say. Now my only concern is the 40 amp circuit I plan to plug it into. Im afraid I bought a range needing a 50 amp breaker. I looked in the manual and installation instructions and nowhere does it say it requires a 50 amp breaker, it says 'look at the rating plate'. I asked the dealer what the nameplate KW rating was and he said there is no way to know until it arrives (on order). He said the 40 amp breaker should work. I called Maytag and they said they did not have that info directly either??? So what I am worried about that I ordered a stove that may require a 50 amp circuit and I only have a 40 amp circuit??

We are at the beginning of a remodel of a 1950 home so this site has quickly become like the big wing of a mother duck to me that I run to over and over when all these decisions make me dizzy. After looking at the brazillion photos of backsplashes, I agree with most of you about the simplicity being the better choice. But the reason i'm actually writing this first post here is just to say how refreshing it is to read your comments; after being on other blogs (like Apt. Therapy)where the people viciously attack each other, it is such a relief to get to know you all through your words that are complimentary and helpful at the same time! Classy is the word for you - thanks.

I have a gas range top. It will light with a match when the power is out. I think its an important feature for people living in certain areas, ie hurricane prone areas or frequent electrical outages. When hurricane Charlie hit us, we had no power or water for over a week. It's a long time if you haven't experienced that kind of event. All of our friends had ranges and gas ovens that could not be lit with a match. We all had tons of food in the freezer thawing so everyone came to our house to cook. It was fun having everyone bring their food and cook it on my 6 burner stove top but I would never have a stove top without the ability to light it with a match. The oven is electric but I can live without that. My husband went on a long distance kayak trip many moons ago. One fellow was a professional baker who made an oven from a cardboard box. I wasn't there so can't give the details but stories are they ate well with everything he baked from bread to breakfast pastries etc he was the hit of the trip. How one can construct an oven from cardboard and use it to bake over a camp fire leaves me wondering. But...it's a true story Inga

I think we can assume that either destiny C told them they were on propane or that they were in the country. I see that this stove has sealed burners. I am the only person here who ever comments on this situation; perhaps propane is just too rare on this site. With sealed burners, the only adjustment for flame performance (gas/air mixture) is the little hole size of the conversion orifice. The conversion kit will come with the expected appropriate orifices (they screw in and out with a 7 or 8 mm socket, forget which) but from experience I can tell you that they won't necessarily be quite right. Whirlpool may be willing to send you some corrected orifices due to safety issues, but they may not have the best choice anyway. I assume the problem is that these burners are designed for natural gas and the conversion is a compromise. This would not be an issue with open burners. Then there is the possible issue of low burner adjustment. My first experience was with a KitchenAid cooktop that had easily adjustable low flame setting, but it broke for unrelated reasons and I replaced it with a Whirlpool cooktop that some dolt designed with adjustment screws that won't screw down low enough so ALL burners including a small simmer burner won't adjust low enough for a simmer. Since the KA (made by whirlpool) would adjust low enough, but my newer Whirlpool wouldn't, I don't know if this was a design error in my model or basic Whirlpool wide.
