Recycle Old Jeans Into A Skirt

These were my nieces outgrown jeans that I turned into a skirt for my granddaughter. I had to put a patch on the back because it was worn thin, but I added one to the front just because :D There is a link to someone's tutorial on how to make these on my blog in case you want to make some,too. A great recycled refashion! I personally think you could sell these, too.

have made several of these and they've sold pretty well. Denim is my bag in case ya missed it!LOL thanks for sharing, the skirt is adorable!!

come on, gina... fashion's no longer geared towards elegant ladies like it was right up through the 60's... fashions all about 12 year olds, now. as in you gotta be built like one to wear most of the stuff... HOWEVER, to quote Women's Wear Daily "Donatella CLOTHES her models.." looks like even the fashion industry has realized that they've taken 'sexy' too darned far... most of us don't even WANT to wear a knock off of a versace any more... black bandaids and sequins just don't do much for me, eh? all the really good stuff I own hearken to another era... if not another century. my mom's seater sets. my grandmother's flapper gowns (which covered a lot more skin than you'd think...) fancy-fabric leggings that go with blousy pirate shirts (think 'cutthroat island') and soft boots... jeans have been an american uniform since forever... the 50's turned them into icons (remember, women wearing pants in public used to cause scandal!) now... they're just common.

Thanks, you all! I'm so glad to know I'm not alone--I was a bit afraid last night after I posted that someone would reply with something like "you're cramping your daughter's style--you should let her dress like her friends" but honestly she's creeped out by the clothing her friends wear too! She's very athletic, and if my DD could wear athletic clothing all the time, I think she'd be happiest :). Her friends from her homeschool resource center classes aren't athletic, and they dress in ways that, as DD says, "they couldn't run if they wanted to!" LOL. Love that girl's sense of priorities :). We'll be seeing what her XC friends (she runs with a local inter-school track club) wear in their off-hours in a couple of weeks on a road trip...should be interesting... But in terms of sizes, DD is definitely in the no-hips-no-butt category (the adjustable tabs on girls pants were the only things that allowed her to wear jeans at all during her 'youth' :))--I'll look at Levis again. Our problem with them so far has been that all the boy-size pants that are long enough to fit her legs are too big around her waist! She's a pony, for sure--takes after her nice tall Dad, not her short monkey-Mom :) -- so she's got legs forever and just the barest suggestion of hips. You all have given me some great suggestions - I'll report back with what worked. This is such a fabulous age, so exciting for the girls, as they work through their own identities and try out different personae...

Hi Marti, I've been away from the forum a while,and missed your post. I love making jean quilts. I'm saving up for number 3. I don't have a picture of the last one, but here's the first one I made. I learned alot from it, most importantly, is to use the heavy duty snips like mentioned above. It'll save your hands lots of swelling and pain. After it's made, I cleaned the washing machine and dryer after each time I washed and dried, and took it outside and gave it a good shake between washing and drying. Hello I just found this site and i love it.I love making originals from used items. As for jeans i have found some uses for the part i usually have left over, the top by the pocket area.i have made many stockings.i cut along the zipper to cut the two legs apart, then cut a stocking shape with the inner thigh as the toe,the pocket stays in tack for extra space, back belt loop for hanging,is absolutly adorable. i have also used this part of the jeans for paper by the phone.i just cut it flat on the bottom instead of stocking shape, fill main part with paper and pocket with pens hang by belt loop.these were both items i did with my kids jeans. Right now i just started a garden items holder. i intend to cover a large pair of mens jean overalls with pockets from leftover projects.i hope to keep my garden tools together hanging on the wall in this.i my mind its cute, i'll post a pic when its done. I also have in my minds eye to make a book/small toy holder for my daughters room with the tops of jeans cut down the sides and sewn to a opened up leg piece of jean. nice to meet fellow salvagers... i'll be lurking around...

oh, wow.....i honestly don't know where you get zippers for those teensy 'lil shorts.....what are they.....like 4" of denim?? and today i saw some stretchy ones about 3" or 4" high...the casing for the drawstring wasn't much smaller than the rest of the shorts, and they had a slit halfway up the side! i've got washcloths larger than those....

oh, that's good that there might be a market for them! do you have photos or a blog?? i'd love to get more denim ideas!

one of the thrift stores i go to had a ten cent sale on clothing, and i got a lot of blue jeans and a lot of lightweight denim dresses among other pieces of clothes. so now i'm looking for some good ideas. i'd already made an apron from one of my jeans pants legs,and a denim and bandana headband, and i'm making skirts from my niece's outgrown jeans for my grand daughter. so any ideas would be so great!

I love making purses out of them more than anything! cut just the pockets out and make "Bar Bags" they are just big enough to put your cell phone, ID and a bit of cash in your bag and go out dancing without having to carry your huge purse around with you. I also make the pocket purses cute for little girls too. The fun of those for me is finding unique things to make the straps out of.. everything from old stings of beads from my Mom's last trip to Mardi Gras to ribbons and braided leather strips from an old belt, etc. Love those and they've sold excellently for me too! also the simplest purses are made from my daughter's outgrown jeans skirts. Just sew the bottom hems closed and boom, you got a purse! Soo many ways to decorate them and again fun and funky straps. Just love it! :0)

At this last show I saw a woman who was wearing a poncho made out of denim squares. it was so cute! She told me she made it herself using the same techniques you use to sew granny squares together when you are crocheting. I know NOTHING about crochet so I guess that idea is out! LOL

Most of all just have fun with it, cuz when it gets to be work, it's a JOB and who wants that!!!!
