Painting pointers needed! Trying to imitate dog hair on wood!

Hi, My dad has made a golden retriever out of wood. When finished it will sit on the floor and hold a lantern in its mouth. Really cool! He now has encountered a problem. I told him that I would post and ask for help.

He has the primer on and the base coat of "sand" colored acrylic paint. Now he is suppose to take a reddish brown color and "streak it" to imitate the hair of the dog. His first attempt did not go well. He said the paint went on too thick. Can you offer any suggestions for the type of brush that he should use? Does he thin the paint and if so, how? Can you put your technique into word directions for him? After the reddish brown is on, would you go back and do the same with a little of the sand or is it enough to have the sand as the base coat?

Any help or tips would be appreciated! Thank you in advance!
