I haven't done this in several years, but I just did a quickie.
After you make your tables, click the table you want to use, then go up to the taskbar > Insert > and from the dropdown select Picture > From File and browse to your picture you want to use.
After the picture is in the table, right click the photo and select Picture Properties and resize the photo (specify size), keeping the aspect ratio. Something like 100 in pixels.
I used to get something on the bottom left that would do thumbnails automatically, but don't have time tonight to find the tool. The oldest version I have is 2003.

Just insert > picture > from file > will get the picture in for a start.

This may help with automatic thumbnails.

Set the properties for thumbnails
In Page view, at the bottom of the document window, click Design .
On the Tools menu, click Page Options, and then click the Auto Thumbnail tab.
Do one or more of the following:
To specify the size, in the Set box, click the option you want, and then in the Pixels box, type or select the value in pixels.

This worked for me exactly as you've outlined. One slight problem. Once I've completed the process and have a thumbnail and correct the size to fit into my table, it looks distorted.

Now when I just size the photo the picture is not distorted. However, I would like to be able to click on the photo and have a larger two cell table appear with a large photo and a detailed description of the photo. Does that make sense? Can I do this without using the thumbnail feature? Perhaps use the hyperlink feature instead? With this am I making my website an incredible size making it difficult find a webhost?

I've always had the same problem, I guess that's why I size the photo myself, just to keep the aspect ratio and make all photos the same size.
I think the auto thumbnail may just shrink the photo to thumbnail size without keeping the ratio which distorts the picture.

Perhaps use the hyperlink feature instead
Yes, right click the thumbnail, use hyperlink and put in the address to the page with the large photo and description, which means you'll have to make a separate page with the large photo and description.

Don't worry about the size, any webhost can handle yours, including the free yahoo geocities where I put this site that I made with Frontpage for our Iris Society and haven't even scratched the storage space limit.

I know exactly what you're going through.
This is what I did in 2002 (told you it had been a few years) thumbnails
I don't think I used a table but tried to evenly space the small photos then made a hyperlink from the thumbnails to a page with a 2 column table with the full photo and a description, sorta what you're trying to do.

Yes, it's a time consuming learning process.
First you learn how to do a background, do text, insert photos, learn how to insert tables and get photos inside, how to make hyperlinks to link it all together.
Before long they'll be calling you a WebMaster.
btw that's how I did it, one photo at a time.

Yes, that is exactly what I am trying to creat. In fact, here is a website I am trying to mimic in a sense...http://168.144.5.235/cca/daylilythumbnails_ab.htm. You can see when you click on the thumbnail it enlarges into a 2 column table. I am going to have hundreds of pages linked everywhere. wow! You would think there is an easier way to do this. Oh well.

I finished putting all my photos in my main tables and am now going to create my 2 column tables and hyperlink them to the photo in the main table. I'll post my website if for you to look at if I ever get it completed. ha ha.
