Any thoughts about this machine?

I have posted this on the sewing fourm, with no response. Hoping someone here has information on this:

New Enterprise D Antique Sewing Machine??

I have searched for information on this machine with no luck. I know it was purchased in the 1940's. Cabinet included for 60.00. It has been in a storage shed. Can anyone tell me about this one?

Now reduced to 50.00 I have 4 sewing machines now, but did not want to pass this up if its a good deal.

Wouldn't consider a machine from the 40's as antique. I have my mothers New Home built/purchased in 1939, in a small cabinet, found out it wasn't worth even $40.00.

Here's a site for collectors of really old machines, I have a 1918 (I think), it's been years since I had Singer check the model number and a 1902 Wheeler and Wilson, both belt driven treadles, complete with bobbins an many extra feet, both work.

Antiques must be at least 100 years old to be an "antique" otherwise they are just "old".

In addition there is a difference between a quality antique that gains value and just an interesting old sewing machine that doesn't. I don't know if the one that you are interested will fall into the interesting or valuable category - but something that is unique, in excellent condition and has appealing decoration is important.

I'd be concerned about something stored in a shed - moisture could cause problems such as mildew, damage to wood and joints etc.

If you do purchase it - I hope you are happy with your decision.

I must admit I have 3 old sewing machines of no particular value, just sentimental - how does this happen? They multiply like rabbits?

I appreciate all the replies on this thread. I liked the Viking 'designer' line gas cooktop, but it's performance specs are not as good as DCS or Monogram. Oddly the specs on their "professional" cooktop weren't any better. I want power and simmer. The dual burners on the DCS and Monogram seem to offer that the best. Also their burners have cast brass instead of steel. Even the pricey Thermador doesn't use brass, and it 'clicks' the burner on and off to maintain a simmer. So now it's down to choosing DCS or Monogram based on their layout, reliability and customer service. This is where I really reply on the postings here. I'll take some of my big pots to the good store next week and verify I can use them with both. I'm going to have double ovens installed next to the cooktop. I want big drawers beneath it. I'm planning on the Electrolux (not ICON) ovens because they have the best mix of features I really want, and I like its styling better than Monogram. I also looked at Viking "Designer" ovens and a Bosch. I really like them for their looks and using knobs instead of an electronic interface. They have the features and power that I want, but I'm too concerned about reliability. I haven't heard ANY complaints from the owners of Electrolux ovens! So I chose better reliability over knobs. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm still in "planning" phase with my remodel. Tear out begins in a week. It will be about 8 weeks (I hope) before I installed mew equipment and test it out.

Thanks you so much for all of your feedback and encouragement!! It really helps!! I know I can't really be objective about it yet, so it is encouraging to hear your positive feedback!! I went and looked at it again today and it is definitely growing on me :) I am not going to change it! yeah! That would have been a pain! I think there is just something about seeing the finishes the first time... I did the same thing with our hardwood floors. I thought they looked "slightly orange". Everyone I asked told they they didn't see any orange... Now I love the floors! Crazy!! This process has definitely been an adventure! Did I mention I've been living with my in-laws for the past 10 months in a small patio home, with hy DH and three kids! I can't wait to cook it our new kitchen!!!! Thanks again!! Jill

Jackie, You're very welcome. At my childhood home (which was my Mom's childhood home as well), we had several big old spirea which never got any attention but thrived. Mom wasn't much of a flower gardener so they were one of the few that did thrive. Rhonda

Yes, he was one in a million and a desperately missed friend. I've had a number of his roses over the years and agree that Gentle Annie (named for his sister in law, of whom he said, "she is the gentlest person I have ever known") is superb. In Zone 9b, Newhall, it was as good as Iceberg for landscaping, only without the occasional mildew and in mauve shades. I have a 1915 Singer that to me is priceless. We paid $100.00 (I think) for it about twenty or twentyfive years ago and my DH refinished it. Some one had painted it off white with smears of green and gold paint. It still sews a neat stitch but I don't do much sewing these days.

turns out.. she pluged it in and it would not come on she put it on the curb and listed it on free cycle. It was only 100.00 new SOOOOO...... glad I did not buy it.
