Miele canister vacuum question

We are in the market for a canister vaccum cleaner. Based on online research as well as personal recommendations, we are considering a Miele. I have a question, though, and haven't been able to find a good answer. We are two adults, no kids, no pets, no asthma and no serious allergies, although I would love to keep the dust and dust mites down! We have about 60% wall-to-wall carpet and the rest tile and hardwood. I believe we will need a powerbrush for the carpets. My question is about the Sealed System vs. the CleanAir system. It seems like the Sealed System combined with the Hepa filter is superior as far as keeping the dust and dust mites at bay. The Delphi, which costs $499, appears to be the cheapest model that has power hoses and a powerbrush. It doesn't have a Hepa filter, but you can upgrade to one. But to get the Sealed System and powerbrush you have to move up to at least the Libra which costs $849. There are other differences too, of course, but these are the ones I'm most interested in. Does anybody know if it makes a big difference to have the Sealed System vs. the CleanAir system? Is it worth the extra $350? Thanks in advance for your help!

Each of my family members owns a Miele vacuum in their house. I currently have i think the Callisto. It doesn't have the powerbrush, but we have mostly wood floors. I did replace the normal air-filter with the HEPA air filer, but this has been running on the machine for over 2 years now and it still looks clean as a whistle. This is testament to Miele's ridiculously awesome bags. You will know what I mean when you see them. They are made out of a very dense, but breathable material, and nothing seems to get through them. (Except smells, if you vacuum something stinky) Do you really need the HEPA filter? I suppose that depends. I have very bad allergies so we do, but if no one has allergies in your home, I would imagine the regular filter combined with Miele's bags should be fine. I doubt many particles make it out of there. Everytime I replace a bag, the inside of the vacuum is clean as the day I bought it, so I don't think any dust or particles are escaping.

Not I or any of my family have bought the Sealed System versions. I don't know exactly how much better the results are, but it doesn't sound like dust is much of an issue for you to begin with. I would think you would be more than happy with the Delphi.

Thanks so much for your input, Anthony! That kind of personal experience is so helpful! I would love to open up my vacuum after two years of use and find it clean as a whistle! My only concern is the that Miele website says under the Callisto model, "Canister Construction - Sealed System Construction," whereas for the Delphi model it says, "Canister Construction - CleanAir System." Is the Sealed System something new that wasn't found on vacuums from a couple of years ago? If everyone gets the great clean results from the CleanAir System I will feel more comfortable going with one of the lower cost models. Thanks again!

The Miele Naturell would work for you, if you wanted a basic Miele canister. You are the only one to judge if the Naturell is too heavy for you. I would suggest that you compare them in person, since you are the one who is using it. I do not think that you would need to purchase the Miele S4(Galaxy) series canister unless you thought the weight was much better. You said that you have "90% floors" and a few rugs. I was wondering how big those rugs are? Are they something like small rugs(3x5) or are they room sized rugs? You could get by without a brushroll attachment if you have the smaller rugs. If you had roomsized rugs, you might want to consider a vacuum with the brushroll attachment. A turbo brush will have a slight advantage over a basic combination rug and floor tool. Look to Simplicity and its sister brand the Riccar. The Simplicity Jack and the Riccar Moonlight canister will work for the types of jobs you listed. They will not be as quiet as the above Miele, but they are not loud. The Riccar or Simplicity bags should not cost you as much as the Miele bag. The vacuum cleaners themselves might cost more than the Miele Naturell though. Tacony, the company that owns the Riccar and Simplicity brands, markets some very good vacuum cleaners. They are not going to seem popular to some, because they have not heard of them. They have been around for a while. They are only sold in vacuum cleaner shops. They are very good vacuum cleaners.

lynn2006, Those online prices are MSRP. You will find that most dealers will sell it for less, when you enter their store. The Simplicity S36/S38 are very good deluxe vacuum cleaners. They are a larger canister vacuum that was more comparable to Miele's older full size Blue Moon. Tacony owns the Simplicity brand as well as the Riccar brand. If anyone is having trouble finding a Simplicity dealer in your area, they can just look for a Riccar dealer. The Simplicity S36's sister is the Riccar 1700. The Simplicity S38 is also the Riccar 1800. The S36 is going to be heavier than the Miele Callisto. Tacony decided to come out with comparable Mid-sized vacuum cleaners, so they came out with the Riccar Pristine, Charisma and Starbright, plus their sisters the Simplicity Verve, Cinch and Jessie. When purchasing Riccar or Simplicity supplies, you will find that their bags are priced cheaper, as well as their filters and attachments. Mieles are going to be slightly quieter, but the S36/S38 and 1700/1800 are just slightly louder. Here is a link that might be useful: Riccar canisters

This is my response on another recent topic: "I own two Miele canister vacs. I was tired of the various other big name brands that worked, but exterior body parts always broke, etc. After much research, I splurged for my first one in 2008. I bought the second one for the upstairs, after owning the first for a couple of months. . These are the absolute quietest vacuums I have ever owned, and a bagged vac is a must for my allergies. What I really like about the Miele on stairs, as opposed to any other canister I've ever owned, is that the exhaust is on the top of the canister. This means I can place the canister "upright" (on its end)/perpendicular to the floor without obstructing the exhaust. I really like the push-button telescoping wand feature of the Miele canister vacs. One of my Mieles has the attachment tools hidden "under the hood". The other only has them mounted on the top. I prefer the hidden tools, but this is only personal preference." In addition . . . The wand's interior diameter is narrower than other brands I've owned (Panasonic, Hoover, Kenmore) so I'm careful to not vacuum up anything over 3/4" in diameter and that could be a deal-breaker with kids toys, Legos, etc., for you. The Telescoping wand feature, or else the electric cord component for power tools that is enclosed, probably are the reason for the narrower interior diameter. I bought the power turbo brush attachment for upholstery and am not impressed. ~meh~

I have an 11 year old Miele canister vacuum and am looking to buy another one. We have pricey 100% new Zealand wool carpeting throughout much of our large home. I have been deliberating for weeks and wondered if anyone has tips? Or wants to share advice? Is the electrobrush (SEB 228) too strong or aggressive for tufted wool loop carpet? Or is it ok because you can adjust the height of the brush? Thank you!!

I would definitely go to the store and try the various canister models out on some real world carpeting. I do not have the clean air model so cannot comment on them, but our Capricorn (which I ordered with the large SEB-236 powerhead) does splendidly on both our tile and our carpet. I can actually use the powerhead on the tile if I want, but I get the best results with the parquait tool for that. The cool part is that all you have to do to change out the head is step on a latch where the powerhead connects with the hose and the SEB-236 comes apart. No having to unplug anything as the power for the beater bar is integrated into the hose itself. Then just snap on the parquait tool and do the tiles. Afterwards, you just pop the wand back into the powerhead and you are ready to go again.

I also like the fact that you can turn everything off, adjust the speed, etc. right there at the handle without having to bend over with the Capricorn. Personally, I wouldn't fool around with anything less. Also, contact me by my email link and I will tell you how I got a nice chunk of change knocked off that minimum advertised price policy Miele is so varicose over.
