GOOD under-counter fridges?
Comments (20)No - any of the better-quality under-counter fridges turned out to be, for us, prohibitively expensive relative to their utility (too small - I'd need at least three of them to equate the capacity of a regular fridge), too noisy and fraught with technical issues, according to what I've read here and elsewhere. It's too bad that the True commercial sandwich fridge isn't allowed in the house, as I would LOVE it - I just think it's SO functional and practical (noisy, though). Oh, well. Are you listening, True people? Make a similar one for the domestic market, PLEASE! I am amused that under-counter fridges are already standard for the high-end outdoor kitchen. Ironic that, when it's the man-of-the-house in charge, sensible utility is at the forefront! Viz self-actualised pool-cleaners, et al. I guess - what: manufacturers just don't listen to millions of irritated and exhausted foot-weary housewives? A debate for another day, no doubt. We've re-jigged our kitchen plans to accommodate two mid-size 25" wide fridge-freezers, FP or similar (link below), which are small enough that we can raise up on a plinth slightly (one of our cats has an annoying habit of peeing against the grills, ugh) and still reach the top shelves. They have a linking kit, and it's substantially less expensive than Liebherr and their equivalents. And just think: when one conks out, I'll still have its brother! I've also given up on the idea of a corner toilet. Still would like a wall-mounted one, though - way easier to keep the floor clean! Comments (97)I have the Monogram and can confirm the issue with the mold in the tubing too and it seems like black mold and flakes of green calcium like you see on copper. It reminded me of the clear 1/4” irrigation lines you can buy for aquariums and such. I had clear piping for some plants on the deck and they would clog with calcium build up. I switched to the black 1/4 inch tubing and the problem went away. I wonder if replacing the piping in the GE Monogram with black tubing would solve the issue. It seems like light contributes to the growth with my experience with clear tubing in irrigation. Does the little bit of light the ice maker gets cause the issue? I am not sure, but I may try black piping the next time I clean it. The half inch stuff they sell at Lowe’s should work and I may put some 90 degree elbows in with the connections to help out with the length of the piping. I know the ignorance is bliss will come in to play at least with the black piping. I wonder if bleach will work work any better than the phosphoric acid cleaner to clean the pipes? May give that a try before the phosphoric cleaning The GE Monogram is loud. The water valve is just plain old loud. Not sure why a water valve has to be loud! i was think of putting a carpet remnant underneath, and cutting a big piece of styrofoam to put beneath the door. Heat displacement versus sound will be the battle....See Moredrawer refrigerators and freezers
Comments (9)I don't have any experience with the freezer drawers, but I do have the Perlick fridge drawers. I needed a 24" unit and they seemed to be the best in that category. SZ would probably be my choice if I had needed 27". I saw the CR article that appeared after I'd bought mine and noticed they didn't rate Perlick. They didn't even seem to know abut them because another of their criticisms was that none were energy star rated, but the Perlick are. They have a high BTU variable speed compressor that runs quietly and efficiently. It does have an off switch on the front. The 2 liter bottles will not fit standing. We thought they would, but it isn't a big deal for us. We generally have milk, juice (about 2 gallons of each) and large pitchers of iced tea and filtered water in the top drawer (along with jam for PB&J sandwiches or toast) and water bottles and other beverages in the bottom one. The drawers did cost as much as many full size freestanding fridges, but they turned out breakfast room hutch into a marvel of convenience and eliminated a lot of traffic across our kitchen during meal prep and eating times....See MoreShow me your undercounter refrigeration
Comments (3)Here is ours, a Jenn Air. Like beagles', it has 2 sections ... although not as pretty as hers with the glass cover and white sides. Fairly quiet, a decent workhorse. But, like beagles, I also feel it would be unworkable as the sole refrigeration in a kitchen. We use it for milk and berries and ice and other coffee station / smoothie fixings. As a main fridge, not a hope. Interior usable space fridge space is 19" wide. I can't imagine a single 19" deep drawer for milk, produce, and other daily use stuff. Even just as a produce drawer alone it would drive me nuts ... the depth alone makes in impractical. I have 2 x 27" wide 9" deep drawers for produce in my regular fridge, love that they keep fruits and veggies at their proper humidity and that said fruits and veggies aren't all piled up on each other in a jumble. Could not do that with a drawer fridge, let alone store the other things I'd want handy to a prep zone. My $.02 only, and worth what you paid for it. :) Good luck whatever way you decide to go.
