Installed XP - now Plug and Play doesn't work

Hi, I installed XP on my Toshiba Tecra S1 due to virus problems. Everything is working fine but the Plug and Play doesn't work.

If I have mouse, memory sticks, etc. plugged in the USB ports before startup, everything works fine, but if I add any such thing to the USB port after computer is on, nothing works. I even tried "scan for hardware changes" but any items added to the USB ports after startup don't work.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You might first look in the control panel for the applett thats titled something like 'Toshiba Hardware Control and look through that. Hopefully you'll find what you need there - if not,,,

Look at your Service's
SSDP
Is it running ?
If not, set it to automatic and manually start it,,, it will start at boot when set to automatic.

There's also a service for uPnP, for your normal install it should be set manual. But you can also try it auto.

Maybe right click My Computer>Manage>Services and Applications>Services, and find Plug and Play and make sure it is Started and Automatic.

Those foam cans are a mess. I'm trying to use them as little as possible. I've been schmeering latex (dap230 or something) caulk in the rim joist area with xeps. I say 'schmeer' 'cause you can't get you get the caulk gun on the bottom joint. I've been putting in several (4) blocks of 2" xps in each bay and caulking between each. I'm gonna link up with the wall foam for a continuous layer - that's the plan anyways. You go through a lot of caulk, plus it's taking forever. I'm committed now though and stubborn. You're supposed to use non-petroleum based products with the foam, but I found the polyurethane foam was real stiff, and with all the schmeering with the fingers, the latex is probably better for the skin too as well as fumes and cost. I don't know if the latex has petroleum, but it doesn't appear to be melting the foam. My plan is to leave the foaming til last, since you have to use the whole can at once.

After you find the missing GFCI receptacle, consider changing the wiring and putting GFCI receptacles at each location that requires them. They are only around $10 each, and having the button there to reset them is easier than going to a remote GFCI. All you need to do is find what receptacles are fed from the LOAD side of the first one on the circuit. Install new GFCIs in place of the receptacles, hooking the LINE side of each one up. Go back to the old GFCI receptacle and move the output lines from the LOAD side to the LINE side. Cascading GFCIs (connecting the LINE side of one to the LOAD side of another) is a bad idea.

Counter installed, wall color now doesn't work

Hi Mags, they are on the same swatch as Gray Owl, but these colors are not the same as colors in other collections with descending chips showing greater saturations of the same hue. If you look at the top chip on the swatch, November Rain, it's almost taupe. The chips at the bottom aren't increasingly saturated, they're less brown, completely different colors. It's a little confusing. I hate it when they deviate from the rules... I have a few samples myself. I bought three samples before I found the right color for my family room walls. I hit the cabinet paint colors on the first try. You just never know. It's worth it to find the right color, and by the way, I'm sure your contractor loves you if he's painted that wall three times already. The single most confounding outstanding variable will be lighting (warm or cool LEDs), so if you want to wait for UCL to be installed, that's reasonable. But if possible, check out the cabinet color and the paint color together in daylight before you take home another sample. If they don't harmonize in the same light, they're not going to look good in your space. Good luck and don't forget to show us what you pick!

lazygardens photo shoes variations, but just different shades of the same tone. RED is a whole different family than Brown, and I can't imagine the same wood turning RED with a simple varnish. I'm with you. I would be bothered by the completely different color hues. It would be understandable, light vs dark in the SAME color family, but 2 different families on one piece of wood? Looks to me like 2 different woods. I just walked in our pub and looked at the butcher block top, stained in a walnut tone, and yes, there are variations, but every little piece of the block has the same tone. Maybe the fix would be to strip the whole thing, stain it all one color, and then apply varnish? I am sorry this happened to you. Good luck with getting the contractor to fix it for you. If you still owe money you do have leverage. An unhappy customer is not good business for any contractor. Fingers Crossed for you!

Did you re-install XP from your restore CD or did you use an over the counter copy???? If over the counter, you have to go to Toshiba.com (USA) go to Laptops>support> and submit the model etc of your laptops and download all your drivers/utilities/and common modules. The drivers for your laptop wont be on an "over the counter" copy of XP

I agree with genes, you may need some drivers for the usb to be recognized.

I have had that same problem many times. Usually you want to make sure you install the chipset drivers first then everything after. Look at your device manager to see what needs to have drivers installed. You can find that by right clicking the my computer icon and going to properties. Go to the hardware tab and click on device manager.

Anything with a yellow exclamation point next to it will need to have drivers installed. After you get them all installed, get all of your windows updates and make sure to get a virus program on there so you don't need to do this again right away
