Making a system Backup

1) When I make a system backup of my computer, does it also copy all the currently loaded programs AND files from Word, Excel and such? How about Outlook emails & contacts?

2) So, if something happened to my computer (Windows got corrupted or something), I would just copy the "system backup" from the external drive to the laptop C drive and everything will be as it was? I'm using Win8.

How do you make your system backup ?? if you are running the wbAdmin command .. yes is the answer to your question.

Win 8 is complicated. It has file history that will back up your files but not the programs.

It also has commands to run sort of a system backup that backs up your programs and settings.

It also has skydrive - that does part of your settings and further backup redundancy when combined with your windows login ?

Many people will probably want to install a backup program that also makes a system image. That along with the file history & maybe skydrive and you should be pretty much good to go for simplicity. Back up to a remote drive in case your drive dies.

I definitely second the suggestion of installing a program that makes a system image, regardless of the OS you are using. There are several freebies that do a good job. Do some Googling and you'll find several. By saving to an external drive, you can start over, not losing most programs, and most importantly having the operating system for re-install, just in case of a catastrophe.

yup I live in the mid-atlantic region and a backup to my GT is a must. When we lose power in the winter (usually ice related) we can be without GT for a day or more. When temps are in the teens, you want heat. We didn't have the gas second stage heat as an option for the GT, so we went with a wood burning fireplace insert that is rated as heater. My gas fireplaces are also rated as heaters but the single wood burner is all I need to keep the house warm enough. I have a small backup generator that provides enough power for the controls and internal fans on all fireplaces as well as portable fans that we use to move the warm air around the house. Regardless of your backup heat approach, you will need a power generator to drive the HVAC fans, tstats, and controls on the gas unit - or fans on the fireplaces. You won't need a lot of power but you have to figure that cost into the equation. You could also look at putting in a whole house backup generator to drive the GT heat pumps but when I looked at that option, the generator size was just too large and that would have cost a lot more than the backup approach we put in.

I have radiant heat in my addition, forced hot air in the rest of my home. I live in central NJ and you are invited to see hot it works if you would like to come to my home. Yes, it does not respond quickly to temperature changes, thatÂs true, but the pluses make it worth it. I have it in a guest bedroom that is in a "slab on grade", that means a cement slab floor. On the coldest days, that room feels great! There is no sound of hot air blowing around. The air doesnÂt dry out your skin and nose. If the door opens and cold air rushes in, it remains warm. It just feels really nice. I have it in my bathroom. When I redid my bathroom and added stone floors, the room looked good but, was unpleasant to be in. When I added the radiant in the addition, I ran it in my bathroom too. I ran a lot of extra in the shower. It feels beautiful! I ran it under wood floors in my kitchen addition and it doesnÂt work very well there. The company said itÂs about 20% less efficient under wood floors, thatÂs not been my experience. I dealt with radiant tec in Vermont and they were very easy to work with. I dealt with David and I can really recommend him. I had a handyman install it after I figured out what I need done. The company helped a lot with the design. If anyone is thinking of doing it themselves, hereÂs what I recommend. I went through a lot of trouble trying to make a continuous run with the tubing from the water heater, to the whole room, and back to the water heater. That was very hard. Where I couldnÂt do it, my plumber made " joints". If I had known that I could have him do that from the beginning, it would have been so much easier. I thought the joints would be a problem. They are not. You do have to get a plumber to do parts of it, unless you know how to do that type of thing. The part where it was installed in the slab, I did myself. That was EASY. (IÂm a small, middle-aged woman.) As far as the thermostat goes, you can install it anywhere you like. It will read the temperature of where ever you put it. I got creative when installing it under my shower. There is a step up to my shower so there was a space under my shower, (this was not new construction). When I put it in the floor under the shower, the pocket of air under the shower, insulated it from the tubing and the shower was staying cold. HereÂs what I did. I opened the wall next to it. And made three "u" shaped runs of copper pipe and inserted them to the space below the shower. My stone shower feels like heaven on a cold day. It would be too expensive to do whole rooms in copper but it didnÂt run too much to do the shower. ItÂs well worth it!

Sorry for a late follow-up here (been traveling) but I found a picture, without too much more information, of the transfer switch which you have. It appears it has wired cords on the two "hard-wired" connections and is basically designed for RV/marine applications where this type of connection is common. I'd simply put a plug and outlet connector on the appropriate cords and make this a plug-in device. Not sure about the 300 watts being able to power the pellet stove (fans, igniter, and auger) as pointed out above, and an alternative power-source to recharge the battery during an outage. Just had our first storm last night (early in the season) and while I do have a pretty good portable generator/hard-wired transfer switch setup, I wasn't quite ready for 11 hours of it... however, the gas cans are now full!

I HAVE a backup program...EaseToDo. My questions is whether a system backup backs up all my installed programs, files (documents), and email contact, messages? Is a system backup the same as an image backup and a clone backup? So if my Windows8 goes array, I can reinstall my system using my system backup to look like it was before the Windows issue.

I've done backups before but never understood what exactly gets backed up in a SYSTEM BACKUP (which is what I do)... versus an IMAGE BACKUP versus a FILE BACKUP.

You are asking about a specific backup program (that you didn't initially mention), didn't it come with instructions and help?

Most software has various capabilities. Does what you have do what you want to do? You're probably the best person to answer the question because you have it in front of you.

EaseUs ToDo .. Their system backup does basically the same function as a system image. Plus you can browse it to grab individual files or folders. Their system backup will re-write the entire boot and windows partitions including everything on it to the exact same state it was in when it was made..

It wont do you any good if you cant run windows in some normal manner to start the program unless you make their Emergency Repair Disc and/or perhaps enable their boot Pre/OS option.

However, the free version may or may not restore to a new replacement hard drive. They reserve that option for the paid version.
