Wall mount range hood or under cabinet range hood?
Comments (5)If you look at the Modern-Aire site, they have several shapes where the front tapers at the top to the depth of an upper cabinet, and the sides are straight so as to butt up to, and cover, the yellow cabinet sides you mentioned. Their typical sizes are 18" and 30" high, but you could get a 24" custom one if your budget allows. Or you could get an 18" and have a box made for above it to cover that area and to which you could attach replacement moulding. The box could be made of either wood matching your moulding or sheetrock. Vent-a-hood has a stainless direct replacement if you decide to stick with the same size you now have. I'm attaching the link to the Modern-Aire page that shows their shapes. PS-10, PS-11, and PS-26 all have the characteristics I was talking about above. Here is a link that might be useful: Modern-Aire Hoods...See MoreDistance between top of cooktop and bottom of hood?
Comments (5)DH did a lot of research on GW, checked the range's manual and spoke to the supplier - Pretige. The most significant part is the capture area. The Prestige technician said that the front to back distance is more critical than the width. The higher the hood from the range the further the hood should stick out over the range (cooking fumes spread out as they rise); especially as you tend to cook on the front elements. A larger CFM cannot make up for an inadequate capture area. For the Prestige unit I am geting it was okay to go up to 36" as the hood depth will be 24". At 32" off the cooktop the hood will start at 5'8"; one inch lower than your height. The technician brought up an interesting point about the brain picking up things better at, or below, eye level so something just above your forehead may missed when working. The width of 36" is at least as wide as the cooktop but you did not mention the depth of your hood. Is it the more standard 18" or is it deeper? DH made a cardboard mockup of the hood and stuck it up at the expected height. It was a good way to check if it was problematic....See MoreHere is the stove wall. Range hood ideas?
Comments (51)DH hated it. He wants a big window in the center of the wall both for keeping an eye on the property (and he said so I can see him if he keels over on the lawn) and also he thought the porch roof overhang would get tangled up with the window framing on right window. And of course with my high back stove there'd be no awesome window like Angie et al have behind their stoves....See Moredistance between range hood and range
Comments (3)To capture rising and expanding cooking plumes, hoods have to grow as they are raised above the cooktop. There are hoods that specify less than a 30 inch gap, but these are generally short (front-to-back) and do not provide sufficient capture area. With sufficient capture area, sight lines to rear cooking utensils may be blocked. This varies with the cook's height, so side view stick figure drawings may be helpful to see the effect. Also, as the cook bends at the waist, it is best to not require the cook to duck. So the answer 'depends.'...See Moredavidro1
