Hair Sticks?

Hi all!

Can anyone tell me the best way to attach beads to the end of a hair stick that has been drilled? Drilled into, not through?

I can't find a forum dedicated to hair sticks. Ha! No surprise. [LOL]

Forgive me; I'm really not trying to be obtuse, but they're sticks you use in your hair.

Picture chop sticks with holes drilled into the ends where one can add beads, wire, feathers, all kinds of hoo-ha.

Brandon7 and Great Plains 1, thank you for your postings. I revised my member profile to include the zone I am in, zone 6. I sent for the pads (they are from NV and my tortoise was not very interested in them, so I left them go except for the one I planted. I forgot to bring that one in and it is cold out (35 F) so I need to plant more. Getting to your comments, I feel terrible that it is a sickly, deformed pad, but you have it, it grew toward the only light it could get at the center of the box at the gap where the flaps met. I read that tortoises can handle the spines, but for our sake in handling them, burn them off or brush them off. These came with the spines already removed, and I would remove them regardless, since I don't want to take chances and hurt my tort. I believe it is a prickly pear cactus and the pads are maybe 10" x 6" x 1 cm. thanks for the help, a-planting I go!

Bless your heart. I mean that. This is an issue that has been hotly debated on the GW nature forums and one that always seems to cause a lot of trouble and hurt feelings. I am not a cat lover. I truly do respect other peoples' love for their cats. I understand that they love their cats like I love my dogs, and that is all fine. The problem comes in when someone else's cat comes into your yard and destroys your birds. I have always felt that it is the responsibility of the pet owner to contain their animals on their property. To me, that is really the "right" thing to do. Unfortunately, that is not how everyone feels, and then there is the issue of feral or stray cats that roam at large. I don't know what advice to give you on this issue. In the past, when I have contacted neighbors whose cats killed my birds and kindly asked them to keep the cats inside, it only served to create a big rift, and the problem was not solved. So, I don't contact neighbors any longer. If the cats are stray or feral, you may be able to get animal control to bring out a trap to capture them and then pick them up. I'm sorry that you have this problem. I know it has caused me a lot of distress in my yard. Good luck to you.

I went in for my 'consult'. My hair is just a bit below my shoulder and quite thick. Price: $425. Ouch. Here's what I was told; no washing for 3 days, no pulling hair back, no tucking behind ears, no sunglasses flipped up on head (that one is really tough for me!) and then use special shampoo with no, um - something sulfate? I can't remember but they said it's readily available and no need to buy their brand, and be sure to color my hair BEFORE the procedure because it actually helps to seal in the color. I forgot to ask what coloring after the fact is like because I color every 4 weeks. During those 3 days, any curve, curl or kink in my hair from sleeping or whatever needs to be ironed out. Regarding what I could expect; will last 3 - 4 months, does not grow out in the way that chemical or Japanese straightening does but more or less 'wears off', will make my hair very shiney and healthy. What it will NOT do is make my hair totally stick straight but it will eliminate frizz. It also will not mean that I am blow dryer or flat iron free but that could be based on hair type. She told me I will be able to wash, comb, then pul my hair back in a pony and it will remain smooth, something I've never been able to do. But if I want some semblance of a 'style' it will require blowing it out as I do now but will require far less work to get it smooth. I'd love to try it but the price is stopping me. If it was $300 and I had it done at the beginning of the summer I could maybe justify it. I'm sure there are other places here that do it (I'm in the Chicago suburbs) but this is the only one I know of. And this isn't a technique I want done by a newbie - this gal has been at it 8 months and has done hundreds of heads.

in looking at your pictures of the basement... see where the band joist/foundation wall that rests on the stone/rubble walls? that is one place to air seal that is worth the time & effort to do so. there are different approaches.. less expensive in materials but more time: would be to caulk tops of joists to floor above and bottom to rubble/stone below. caulk any cracks or penetrations. install 1" or two layres of 1" dow blue board (or corning pink board). use roofing nails, button cap nails ..something with large head to hold foam sheathing in place. use construction adhesive to hold it tight to the wall. caulk edges of foam sheathing to floor at top of joist, and again at bottom of wall to stone wall. do this in all areas of band joist. more cost material..less time to install would be froth pack of closed cell insulation. this is diy. tiger foam is what we have used a few times on small jobs. http://www.tigerfoam.com/#video the site he is spraying..is what I am calling the band joist of your basement. third option..most cost would be to hire the foam sealing out. in the floors large air leakage sites would be any areas where pipes run into the house. under tubs around piping for radiators. plumbing accesses. a mixtue of methods to seal these areas would be pipe insulation around radiator pipes. cut to fit around pipe & into hole in floor. caulked to seal. under tubs..usually a large area. depending on where the tub is located..either metal flashing cut to fit over hole & around pipe. caulked into place & screwed to floor. then caulked around edges of flashing to floor. btw..the radiators you have are really attractive. don't think I've seen such nice looking ones before. of course..radiators are uncommon in this area. I know you are dealing with the ceiling issue right now. hope that goes well. whatever you decide is the fix...seal any gaps between new ceiling & walls of room before reinstalling moldings. this will eliminate any need to caulk moldings to walls & ceiling. will give some more thought to attic later. best of luck.

They're lovely, Barb. However, it doesn't answer my question.

See, I am small. Regular hair sticks are 6-8'' long, which then stab me in the neck. Not terribly comfortable! So I have bought the sticks themselves, and would like to decorate them myself. I'm a little more conservative than the ornaments one finds in the stores anyway. The thing is, I don't know how to get the pins or beads to stay on the darned sticks!

I know that some will use hat pins, and cut off the excess, then use some type of glue maybe to keep it in? I know that i read that somewhere, but darned if i can remember or find where.

You might check out fire mountain gems and see if they have any directions. I know that they sell the supplies- eveyrthing you could want. (look in findings, or do a search for hat pin and/or hairstick)

(i have the opposite problem- the sticks are too short, cuz i have soo much hair, so they get lost in my hair. I've ordered everything i need to do some for me, but haven't done them yet. LMK how yours come out).

Ahh, Angie! I love Firemountain and buy lots of my fittings there. Good idea for instructions! I have waist length hair, myself, but it's thin. Regular barettes or clips are too big, so my alternative is hair sticks. I wish my hair were thicker so I could use some of the beautiful ornaments around. As it is, it's either a pen, a stick, a screw driver (working in computers, sometimes my husband says I come home looking like the statue of liberty with all my equipment stick in my hair), or hopefully a pretty stick.

Ladies, the links are great and have given me lots of ideas. I'm particularly thrilled with ManyHorses.com selling 4.5'' sticks. Now if I could get them to shorten some of their darker ones...!

I didn't realize the bead closest to the very end of the hair stick was usually glued on!!!! DUH!

I make my how looped pins, and have enough head pins to do some nice things. I have an overly large, obsessively collected selection of Indonesian, Balinese and Indian silver beads I want to use with these sticks.

I finally found the page i was looking for.

THis is when i decided i couldn't live without hair sticks. But i also decided for that price i could do my own.

I think this is where i read about them using the hairpins, but i can't find it right now.

Anyways, talk about a site for inspiration!!

I've been there, too, Angie. Great inspiration.
I've just bought some great sticks on eBay. Found some that were 6'', which is juuuuuust too long for me, but they came and they're actually about 5''. Drilled, too!

I've a huge bead collection, so that's not something I have to buy. If you would like the vendors' links from whom I purchased, I'd be happy to share. Naturally, no affiliation here. This one vendor, though, had the sticks at my front door within 36 hours of the transaction. I was floored!

I'm excited to try to put these together. :)

So, now I know what a hairstick is....I've seen them before but never knew they had a name. Those shown are really pretty, aren't they? But expensive!, wow!!! I'm going to have to think about making some of those for my DDs. Thanks y'all!

Sorry for the delay! :)

Here are the links to the items I bought on eBay. The vendor has an online store, but so you could get directly to the hair sticks, I thought this would be the easiest way to see them. I'm pleased with their weight and quality. I am hard on them, bending even mettle ones as I skewer my hair to my head. I haven't decorated them yet, but I'm already using them! [lol].

The black, 5'' ones are here, and the brown wood, 6'' ones are here.

The nice thing for this impatient one, was that they were in my mailbox less than 48 hours later. Blew ME away!

Good luck. Hey! I'd also love to see what anyone does with them! I'm not terribly creative and would love ideas.
