Did word come with your computer or did you buy it separately? If it came with the computer you should be able to restore it. If separate have you lost the cd? Your sister may have a different version of word. If you tell us what make of computer and other details someone may be able to help. If all else fails you can go the the free Open Office. The 'writer' portion is compatible with word.

Ok...I just copied what it said I needed from the instructions. The installation from my old Dell was all on one disk. I'd be afraid I'd mess up the installation if it ended up on multiple CDs. Maybe I should say that there would be more chance for error on my part. The instructions also said that the USB key should have a minimum capacity of 8 GB. Well, when I go to Control Panel, I see there are 45 programs now with total space of 1.12 GB. So what gives with them saying I need a minimum of 8GB? I'm guessing that it would all go on one of the disks at the link below. About them...it says, "This recordable DVD features AccuCORE technology which is 100x more scratch resistant than standard discs. Fights static, repels stains and fingerprints" Here is a link that might be useful: 25 DVD+RW Re-Recordable DVD 4.7GB

In my eMachine, in the Bios I can check the temperature, have you done this? Below is what I posted earlier. If your computer is getting hot it will cut off to protect the PC. If I had your computer I would want to know if your problem is in the hard drive or some were else. If you put your hard drive into another computer as a slave you can do 2 things. Error Checking and Copy your files to a CD. You can buy a hard drive enclosure for about $40.00 or less that will plug into a USB. This will allow you to remove your files. I'm not sure about running Error Checking from an enclosure. Ask someone. This website explains hard drives http://computer.howstuffworks.com/adding-a-hard-drive.htm ----------------------------------------------------------- If you need an Install CD for your computer, call or email them. I bought one for mine for $20.00 from eMachine. --------------------------------------------------- If you can get an extra hard drive (Remove the old one) and use the eMachine Install CD (that you mention) the first thing your computer will want you to do is go online and Register it. You won't be allowed to use the computer except to Register. Just let the computer set and run, if it doesn't cut off than I would say the problem is in your hard drive. Or take the computer to a repair shop. Their getting $65.00 just to check a computer out were I live. ----------------------------------------------------- Check the temperature in the Bios. By tapping F2 Key when you start of. I'm giving my temperature as an example. CPU 38c degrees Current System Temp. 35c degrees ------------------------------------------- CPU Fan Speed 2483 RPM System Fan Speed 1332 RPM

There's a lot of things that could cause this. If the battery on the motherboard (or "mainboard" being the politically correct term these days) dies, you lose the CMOS settings and might not be able to read the drives. They need to be set correctly to read it as before. It could be a cable worked loose. Vibration causes this. If you put in a restore disk it will 99% of the time format the drive and reload as it came from the factory meaning any documents on there will be lost. I'd suggest getting it to a competent person. If you have data to be recovered you need someone who knows what they're doing depending on the importance of the data. You might even want to send the drive to someplace that specializes in data recovery. They're expensive so the data should be critical. Otherwise if less critical, an experienced tech might be able to help. For data recovery, especially from someone with less experience, the more you try to access the drive the more trouble you can cause. If you replaced the mainboard with a different one, most likely the restore disks will not work with it. They're tied to the specifications of the unit for which it's designed. You can't make many changes. It checks for the stuff that's supposed to be there and if it doesn't find it, it'll tell you it's not for that machine. If you're paying for the disk(s) you're usually better off to just buy an OEM version of WIndows. And actually, for that cost, these days it's often worthwhile to look at a new machine. Putting a lot of money into an old computer isn't cost-effective when you can buy a new machine for $200-$300! I have a sneaking suspicion I know the answer to this, but, have you backed up your data lately?
