EEEEKKKS! The phone is another computer!

I had to get another cell phone a couple weeks ago. I got a TMobile Gracity Smart, which turned out to be a dud. I returned it and got a Samsung Exibit II. What a difference! It's battery time is great.

I want to put a voice command on it- a free one of course. I looked at Siri and was overwhelmed at how MANY there were! I really just want to tell it to : call, find something, MAYBE send text/email. Which Siri would be better? If someone has another easy app, I will look at that also.

well siri is for apple phones so I assume you want an android alternative because you can not use apple apps on android just android apps.

that one Cluzee is probably the one I would look at

I have never tried any and really see no need for anything like that on my smart phone, keep in mind they may not do much of what you are hoping for.

Before adding Siri-like apps to your phone, you should know that you have many voice commands available on your phone already. For instance when you bring up your "Dialer," just hit the microphone symbol and tell it the number or the name you want to call. When you want to send a text message, the onscreen keyboard has a microphone button, so you can say your message and the speech-to-text function will automatically type it for you. Etc., etc. What you want you may already have installed as a basic part of the Android operating system. I'm all for adding necessary apps to my Android phone, but not duplicative ones. I recommend you just spend a little time learning how to use the full capabilities of your Android phone.

hatman I would definately recommend home runs for the cable if you can do it easily - and I would suggest running two cables per room if you ever plan on using satellite for TV. For the data, you could get away with one Cat 5e and put a hub or router on the second floor. You can also do the same thing with voice - run one line to a voice distribution panel upstairs - and then run feeders off of that. One thing I would be careful with - 1.25" doesn't sound big enough to me to run 4 cables, 4 data, and 4 voice lines. It is going to be hard to pull all of those wires through unless you use a structured wire - but given the number of rooms you have - you will need more than 1 structured cable. It might be hard to pull all of that cable at once - and you won't get it all through if you try doing them sequentially. I would recommend adding one or two more conduit runs. I just got done wiring my house. I ran 3/4" conduit from the basement to each 2nd floor room so that I can home run a structured multi-media cable to each room. The structured cable has two RG6 and two Cat 5e and is 1/2" in diameter. If you did 4 + 4 + 4 - that is getting close to 1.25" just for the cable and you will need some wiggle room to pull it.

I'd agree that it probably is related to the internet connection, but I won't rush to blame the ISP just yet. It could be what I call a "dirty" connection. Essentially static on the phone line. Has this just started since moving to the new apartment? If so, I'd try a couple things. First, try a different phone jack. Then try a different phone cord. Do you have any noticeable static on your telephone? If so, that's probably it. If not, it could still be an issue, just not enough that you could hear. Another thing to try is to go to another phone jack. Do you have a community room with a phone jack available to try? Phone cords and phone jacks can get corroded, or the tiny wires in there get bent or otherwise damaged. If you don't have another phone cord handy, you could even try switching it around, that is the end that's plugged into the wall - plug that into the computer and vice versa. Another thing to try is unplug all other phones, answering machine, etc and try it. There could be an issue caused by one of them, although I' more apt to think it's related to the phone jack and line in the apartment. Another possibility, is there an alternate dial up number to try? Sometimes that makes a big difference.

I guess it all depends on how much you call from home versus away from home or on the road. We use pre-paid cellular. The new phones were free after rebate and my wife and I each spend about $5-$7/month for the STI Mobile/Sprint service. We only make quick 1-2 minute calls for necessary reasons and it works fine anywhere in the country that Sprint covers. Voice mail and text messaging are turned off on both cellular phones. Other cellular providers are now joining the pre-paid game with good deals. We are still stuck with the old telephone company for home and home office lines. I must have the reliability and quality of a landline for my business. I do pay too much for long distance, toll-free, and local service for my business compared to the low rates available today. Bills are typically $35-$50/month for relatively low volume usage. The last time I switched was from MCI to Ameritech(i.e. SBC/AT&T/who knows?) It was a pain to switch, but the new lower rates were good for a year before they went up again. Our home phone line just went up to $22/month for local phone service. It started at $18 several years ago. Pre-paid long distance service is $.025/minute using cards from companies like Cheap Phonecards. The latest cards don't require you to enter the pin every time from home and you can program the 800 access number into speed dial. The long distance cards are great from hotels too. We are seriously considering the switch to broadband phone service, but our local numbers are not yet portable for Vonage or the others. We are just outside of their large markets. Broadband cable internet is $30/month and speed is around 300K or 10 times faster than dial-up. It is fast enough for our needs. As you've discovered Siri is native to iOS, not Android. Fortunately, Android provides options for voice dialing and other functions. You can even use your voice to dictate email and text messages although I've found it to be less than accurate. As a cute aside, if you cuss as part of your dictation, Android blanks out the "bad words." But you can turn that feature off. ;-)

I think 'voice search' is what is there- is that adaquate for dialing? That is what I want most- if I am in the car and need to call somebody if I am lost, or need a map if I am lost (very easy for me in SA- there isn't a street that goes straight N>EI tried using the 'voice search' without any luck.

Why don't you just try following the directions I gave you to see if it suits your needs?

I was saying which program the phone has. It was a question of comparasion because i couldnt get voice search to work. i appreciate the ones you sent. i have to look at two more of them... thanks.
