malwarebytes fixed my computer

Thank you for your posts about malwarebytes. As you know I posted about my laptop. Well I had problems with my PC also.

The power supply was dying, so I ordered another. It took 11 days to get it, but, when I installed it, my PC seemed to be working fine. Then the following day it started slowing down, until it was just hardly bringing up pages. (A little background for ya'll). I came here to ask questions when I saw the malwarebytes and went to that site and downloaded it. OK, it took 16 hours to go through my computer and found 3 items. Luckily most of that was overnight!

What was found: trojan agent; rogue. win antivirus; PUN disabled security center - antivirus disable notify. Those items were removed by malwarebytes.

My question is do I need to change or check any sites to see if my ID or password was gotten? I have Norton and this is the first time this has happened.

.is Norton up to date???? When your contract for Norton runs out, suggest downloading and installing Avast Free, it works better than Nortons and as the name suggests, its free..before you install avast, you must go to Symantec (Nortons home site) and get the uninstall tool for the version you have...Another spyware program to keep the little boogers from installing on your computer, is Spywareblaster ....you only have to check every few days after the initial install and update to check for further updates.....

Great! It sounds like Malwarebytes got rid of some nasty stuff for you. I'm a big fan of the program. It's rescued my computer a couple of times.

I do have one question though. What Operating System are you running and how old is the computer? I ask because I have never had a complete Malwarebytes scan take longer than about an hour on any of my three computers. Sixteen hours seems unnaturally long.

I also have a suggestion: even though your system is supposedly clean, you should run Malwarebytes once again. Some viruses are very clever at coming back from the dead....

No offense taken. I never recommend realtime applications other than a single AV. Without this limitation a user could inundate there system with applications running in the background which would demand resources and possibly conflict with one another. For all the postive service they could provide the potential negativity is there too. A user has to accept some responsibility for awareness, and protection such as frequent scheduled scans. Kaths you have been infected by the antivirus xp virus this is a very nasty one and takes several steps to clean it, you will need to get these 3 programs and run each of them do not stop with one if it seems better do all of them. If you find you are not able to go to these sites to download the programs that means you have a more aggressive type and you will need to come back here and tell me that then I can lead you to another forum where we can help you with that clean up. for now go ahead and get these programs and run them they are all free. ATF-Cleaner.exe be sure you follow the directions as they apply to each type of browser you have. SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition install it hit the update button tell it to scan your entire drive and allow it to clean anything it finds. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. Wow, there is a lot of good information here. Glad I posted with my problem, now I have something new to try out. Thanks owbist. ravencajun, thanks for the compliment but I only had the first half of it figured out and cboy came to the rescue and helped me with the last half of it. I can't take all the credit. "Smiles" Then zep516 came in catching the fact that System Restore wasn't working right and gave me great information on how to correct that. This was the first time that I've had problems with my desktop, but I have changed the backround on it before and I remembered that and I thought why not check it out and see if I could get it to change and that is when I discovered that the backround had been changed and all I had to do was to put it back like I had it, but then I didn't know how to get the icons back and that's when cboy posted the solution for me. If that ever happens to me again I will know exactly what to do. Thanks owbist for telling me how to move the icons down to the taskbar. I will try that on Wednesday, I will have more time to try it out then. thirdfrt!!!

I am worried about some of the infection found, often you need more intense scans from special programs that can be found on the malware support forums, I would definitely suggest you go to this forum, register and post a thread in the area I am linking to, tell exactly what you said here and ask for help in determining if you are fully cleaned. Some of the rogues are very difficult to remove with out that specific kind of assistance.

Thanks for the advice, and I am heading over to the link now.
I have Home XP, 2004 HP pavilion a410e, and as my PC was working fine after installing the power supply, but started slowing down a day or day and half later believe that is when I got infected. I have used Norton for 6? years without trouble and is on auto update. However, it is possible that the trojan/virus did something there. I tried to contact Norton and was very distressed to find that it was difficult to reach them through site or email. It took several tries for me to even find the contact site, or the discussion forum; but then couldn't register or use chat to speak with a tech. That was probably on my end and I needed to adjust some setting = but it sure didn't set well with me.

RC thanks again for the landz site. Oops, when I mentioned you there, I mistakenly wrote rajuncajun. But they knew who I meant. Happy to say following their advice on scans, no more threats were found.

How often do I run malwarebytes? lst thing in the morning or each evening before turning off computer? I will follow your advice about avast.

I usually say to update then run the full scan on malwarebytes about once a week.

Yes I am over on LzD also, I have a few different names around the net LOL.
