Comments (123)A friend on a non-hippi list sends a photo of her cool CAKE and there is a hippi in the background. She replies that she knows nothing of this Apple Blossom (not an AB) and you say that it looks like Pink Diamond and suggest she looks it up on the internet. She replies that she did a GOOGLE search for Pink Diamond and lo and behold her search reveals a photo that you took posted on this photo. She then refers to you as a wealth of knowledge and starts bombarding you with questions...and of course you encourage her to join the FORUM!! K...See MoreInexpensive Ideas to Customize House?
Comments (13)Ditto nightowl -- we managed to get a Harry Potter room under the stair landing (extra storage) and "fort" spaces in the rear of two of the closets. Anything that is a special "secret", for example if you have backing kids' closets consider a connecting small door. A floor safe or hidden "treasure drawer" for passports or your kids' lost first teeth (put jewelry and the like in safety deposit!). Between-the-studs broom closets or other storage. Someone in another forum was including a small between-the-studs door/tipout in a toilet room for feminine supplies. Plan with your builder/architect for the placement of vents, air returns, smoke alarms, sprinkler heads, etc. both to maximize function and so there aren't just a bunch of random holes and bumps in the walls/floors/ceilings. Consider small splurges for additional function. Our extended-stay visitors tend to comment on the hide-a-hose central vacuum, tapmaster (foot pedal for kitchen sink), and demand hot water recirculating pumps. In another house, it might be the way the sound system or electronics are integrated or hidden. Lighting on dimmers. Or would an outdoor sink/wash station near the backyard door be a welcome luxury? Also think about landscaping items -- would it make sense to give some trees a head start? Solar landscape lighting also can provide a big bang for your buck. Good luck!...See MoreUndercabinet Lighting: Inexpensive light bars vs inexpensive LED tape
Comments (50)Even thin lights may show when you are sitting and look into the kitchen. It seems most new kitchen installs are done with a light rail added to hide the lights behind. We did an update several years ago and kept our old cabinets which had no light rail or moulding below the boxes. DH is rather handy and we bought some oak (our cabinets are oak) corner moulding about 3/4 or an inch wide. I got stain matched up at a good paint store. Cloverdale I believe and they can make stain to match if you bring in a door from your cabinets. We installed that below the cabinets and I stained and varnished the. They gave a little update to the cabinet look and do a great job of hiding our UCL's. They look like they were always on the cabinets and match perfectly. He also installed our UCL and drilled small holes in the bottom of the cabinet, fished the wire thru them and then behind, thru the wall studs up to a soffit where we have access. Wired in an on and off and dimmer switch in our Zephyr fan hood since it has lots of room in the metal body. Virtually no wire showing and the light switch is with the fan light switch. DH is so innovative!...See MoreWhat are some of your favorite, easy, inexpensive home DIY ideas? :)
Comments (29)My house is 8 months old. I have a list of projects I am planning to DIY like we are going to be changing out the builder installed mulch and shrubs with red cedar mulch and new plants. That is something I can do and not mess up. After living here for 8 months the houses personality is starting to take shape. I know it sounds funny to say it has personality but my master bath and bedroom tell me it is not happy being agreeable grey and would prefer to be Iced Blue Silver so my son told me as his Christmas present to me he would get me paint and paint my bathroom and bedroom. When I placed the furniture in my bedroom I thought I had the perfect set up but after being here awhile and once the room is painted I have in visioned my bedroom furniture in a different configuration and can see the whole design layout with new paint color and drapes in my head. I hope it all looks as I think it will or my son will have to move my furniture back to the original spots. I am going to finally tackle drapes/rods and decoration my living room and dining room. When I moved here I wanted to live here a bit before decorating rather than rush out and do it right away. My house looks bare right now because I have nothing on the walls and only wood blinds on the windows. I know I have my furniture placed where it will stay so ready to hit the stores for some color and pretty things to put out. Projects I feel better left to the professionals and heck someone has to keep them in business so it might as well be me. :) I know my limits. Granite in my kitchen and bathrooms. I bought the house without it because I knew I'd want to change things as I got more comfortable in the house. My livingroom, kitchen and dining room are all open to each other and I want to match the granite to the decor I am going to use in all 3 rooms to tie them together. I have a 5'x4' tiled entry way at my front door that leads down to the kitchen dining room area. They carpeted all the way from where the tile ends. My garage door entry is right across from the kitchen and that area is carpeted but the kitchen is tiled. It looks silly and dirt is starting to build up near the garage door entry even though I have a rug there. So I want to have the carpet ripped up in that hall area and have tile installed from the kitchen all the way to the front door entry so it is easier to keep clean. I want to have a 15'x20' sun room put on the back of my house. If I tried to do this myself it would probably lean and leak....See Morebrianstreehouse
