OT - is there a charge for garden web only

My local paper just printed the web address for garden web, and stated that it was free. Is it free if you do not get THS or are they incorrect?

Just like THS there are some forums where you have to be a contributing member and others where you don't. On the list
of forums for the Garden Web and THS the ones that have a yellow star beside which denotes paying membership.
Click on the Garden Web Home Page link at the top of this page and you can see the list yourself.

Yes, The Garden Web forums are free.

Some of the forums here at THS are free, and for others there is a modest $15 annual membership that allows you to post at all of them. If you look at the list of THS forums linked above, you will see yellow stars by those that require membership to post on them. You can, of course, read them all, but to post at those with stars you must have a membership. Considering it works out to just pennies a day, most of us are members.

Creating and maintaining a large forum like this is a time-consuming job (not to mention all the expensive equipment, utilities, etc.), and that is why there is a little fee... and you'll discover that the webmaster (Spike) does not look kindly on nasty remarks, fighting, etc. here, so the folks are all pleasant and helpful... surely worth the price in itself!

Another benefit of membership is that members do not get the pop-up ads that non-members see!

Tamara, thanks for taking input. Upload feature: Needs to be tweaked so the image info stays in the browse box after one clicks preview. Several times a day people post and wonder why their picture is missing. It's because they clicked preview, edited their comments again. This causes the picture to disappear. Please fix this!! Main forum page: If this was dynamic, that would save a lot of time. Many forums have an indicator to tell you if a forum has new posts since your last visit. I like to stay current in about 25 of the GW forums, and it takes a lot of time to click each one to see if there are new posts. Email notifications: Thanks for adding these, but only one notice should be needed per thread. TripAdvisor sends one notice only until you re-visit a thread, no matter how many new posts are added, until you visit it again. PLEASE PLEASE fix it so paragraphs can be used in profile info! It would be so cool to be able to access the pictures each user has uploaded via a link in their profile. Thanks & have a great day!

Great hobby Jen, I do not think you are one bit "nuts", I have some " pre composters" also. 3 bunnies & a Jacobs ram, make lovely pets/companions & the " brown pellets " are great for hostas. About 2-3 years ago I was going to start vermi compost , & whist mentioning it to some friends they knew of these 3 male bunnies who needed a new home quick. Well the little cuties certainly earn their keep & are fun to have. I am sure your little guys keep you motivated in the winter too. And yours propagate too , so there you go even better. Good luck w/ your fertilizer goldmine , only gardeners can appreciate such things :) ~Dot

Bringing plastic bags back for your next shopping trip along with some fabric ones will reduce the bulk of bags. They don't take up much room. Use them until they break. At target, they sell large tote bags that fold & snap closed & smaller tote bags that zip up. And then they sell the standard size that grocery stores sell. I love the big one. My last shopping trip was small, but the bagger stuffed 1/4 of a cart of stuff into 2 bags (cashier gave me credit for 4) They were a bit heavy, but I managed. The bagger could have lightened the load a bit. I'm finding that one of my reusable bags is getting a hole in it...probably from toting around multiple 2ltrs in one bag. If my trip is a onsie purchase, I often tell them not to bag it. What irritates me about plastic is: 1. They rip. 2. Because they rip...the stores double bag stuff w/out question. 3. They roll around in my trunk & I end up having to tie them shut (which makes it harder to bring multiple bags in the house). (Reusable bags are more secure) 4. I take more trips from the car to the house. 5. they are inconvenient to recycle. 6. They don't fit over the shoulder. What I LIKE about them: 1. I have a trash can frame that supports the plastic bag handle style so that I can reuse them. 2. Need something for litter box use. 3. They are available when I forget my reusables.

1) Better search. The current search is not only limited, but buggy (it doesn't return all matching results, even if the posts are recent, for example). 2) Ability to search multiple areas at the same time without searching the entire forum (for example, just Home Decorating and Paint, or Bathrooms and Plumbing, or Building a Home and Remodeling, or Appliances and Laundry Room, etc.) 3) If you're on That Home Site, search should default to THS, not to GardenWeb (this should be a trivial fix). 4) Additional subject areas for topics that always get a lot of questions (Fences and Walls, Roofing, Contractor Disputes, etc.). 5) GW should host its own photos so they don't disappear later -- it's so frustrating to read a thread and not be able to see the photos that go with it, or to have to create yet another account to log into a separate photo site. 6) A simpler way to add a link to a post 7) The ability to add multiple links to a post 8) The ability to designate certain posters as favorites so you could easily see their recent posts (your favorites list should be private, though). 9) A dashboard where you could see your recent activity (threads that you've started, threads in which you've recently posted messages, your watched threads, postings by your favorites, your clippings, etc.) so that you don't have to use search or go to your profile to find this information each time you log in The ability to set up rules for alerts. For example, you could set a rule that sends you an alert whenever mythreedogs (one of the Home Decorating rock stars) posts a photo. No limit on saved clippings Very often, posts aren't very helpful because the reader doesn't know where the poster is located. (This is also true on THS, not just on GardenWeb.) To solve this problem, GW should require all members to provide their zip code, which members could keep hidden if they choose. No matter whether a member's zip code is hidden or visible, GW should ALWAYS display that member's hardiness zone on their profile and posts, as well as a GENERAL description of their location. Members should be able to control just how specific the geographical description is (Greater Boston, Massachusetts, or New England, for example). Ability to edit your own posts and to delete posts that no one has clipped Please recruit forum moderators who would have to the power to delete inappropriate posts and to edit other people's posts (for example, to correct misspelled words in the subject line that would prevent readers from finding that thread The ability to tag threads as helpful or inappropriate The ability to select a font. Thank you Evelyn and Red Confetti. I have been a member since June 2001 and have loved it. I never looked up to see what the yellow star meant and I wanted to make sure the local paper was representing it correctly. My membership is actually due now, so I guess I should renew. $15 is about the cost of a magazine subscription, and I get so much more from this! Thanks again... Bonnie

Bonnie, I just sent in my renewal on saturday.

Spike won't allow discussions regarding politics or religion either which makes it nice because on so many other forums/boards they get into real nitpicking about stuff like that. A simple request for a good thought or prayer is often ok as long as we don't get into specifics. It is really nice.

I think for the number of forums available, THS and Gardenweb that it is a great bargain. Also if you look at the info at the top there is a forum for discussing books and one for movies and one for music.

Oh yes please do renew Bonnie. I just renewed mine on Jan. 1st.
We need all the posters we can get with the forum being quite
sluggish of late and some not being able to renew for one reason or another.
I look forward to seeing more posts from you, Confetti, Minnie
and others that are able to stick around!

Other forums seems less friendly and harder to read than this one THS. it is worth the 15 bucks for sure. I do not wite much but read many with my feet proppd up--- in front of the TV when hubby watches the "races" etc. Especially with the computer forum, it is a great help!
