How much $$$ we talking?

Finally got the individual breakdown.

-Double Wall Oven extended warranty-$200-provides an additional 4 years parts and labor beginning in year 3 (which overlaps with the parts coverage Wolf provides in years 3-5)

-Wolf Rangetop-$200-same as above

-Miele Dishwasher-$150 for additional 4 years parts and labor beginning in year 2

We're leaning toward "self-insuring"---i.e., skip the extended warranties. Any thoughts?

We did buy the extended warranty on our Wolf range. Normally, I don't feel the extended warranty is a good value. However, the extended warranty on the Wolf was under $200 for a range that cost $9000.00, so we bought it. The problem is, we have now had the range replaced twice in the last year and have been told that because we no longer have the original range (with a specific serial number) the warranty is no longer valid. We are trying to sort that out, and thought that perhaps Wolf would agree to offer us an extended warranty for all the hassle we have incurred, but they refused. So I guess what I am saying is that if you get a lemon, an extended warranty may not cover you anyway!

I'd like to see if anyone has purchased an extended warranty for either Sub Zero or Wolf and if so get the details.

Here's what I'm trying to find out. As far as I can tell the company itself doesn't sell an extended warranty. Rather the dealer is selling one from a third party (correct me if I'm wrong on this).

For a whole host of reasons I find this less than ideal, but if it is the only alternative them I'm willing to consider it. Only one problem, some of these third parties have a terrible reputation. Problems range from "warranties" that exclude most of the things that might go wrong to problems getting reimbursed even for stuff that is covered. At their worst they are downright scams.

Ideally if I'm going to buy and extended warranty I'd like it to be from the manufacturer, but if not I'm trying to find out as what I can about the reputation of the various companies writing their own. And finally the markups on these things can be unbelievable, as much as a factor as 3x cost so if one can buy them directly that could make a big difference in the cost.

In our case the warranties would have been through a third party. We ultimately opted to skip the extended warranties because we felt Wolf's original warranty was fairly generous. We also looked at the cost of purchasing extended warranties on all the major appliances and weighed that against the cost of having one or two possible repairs during the same time frame. In the end, we decided they wouldn't sell extended warranties if they didn't make money on them. Of course if you are that one person who has a catastrophic failure just outside the warranty period you'll probably kick yourself for not buying it, but that's a risk we took in not purchasing the warranties.

I did not purchase an extended warranty for my Wolf DF 30-inch range, or for the SZ 650 fridge. I've had these appliances since 2005, and they have worked flawlessly, without incident or problem since the day they were installed. The same is true for the Fisher-Paykel Dish Drawers, the Wolf exhaust fan, and the Panasonic microwave. I'm a happy, contented customer for all of these appliances.

Ask the dealer to throw it in for free. I shopped two different dealers and since the Wolf and SZ were price protected, I went with the dealer who threw in the free extended warranties on my hood, range, refrigerator and microwave. They also gave me my Sharp microwave for free ($800 value). Depending on what you are spending, you should be able to get around 10% from the dealer in free warranties and/or free non-price protected appliances. If they say no ask someplace else. You never get what you don't ask for.

Interesting comments from many -- I learned a lot. For appliances, we shy away from extended warranties. Of course, if the price is too good to pass up, we might reconsider. Haven't encountered that yet. Interestingly, my sense is that the better appliances usually (not always) come with pretty good warranties. And if a particular appliance had a not-so-good reliability history for which an extended warranty might be of value, we probably would just steer clear of that one and get something with a better reliability record.

Sorry this isn't Wolf-specific, but I certainly would consider Wolf a "better appliance".

right on seattlemike - too often in the past on this forum there have been comments like "I know appliance X has a bad reliability record but it will look so nice in my kitchen that I'll just get an extended warranty". WRONG ANSWER. The problem with an unreliable appliance is not just the cost of fixing it, but the time wasted while the appliance isn't working and having to wait around for a repairman to show up.

check out maytag dependability plus warranties. they cover all brands. the number is 1-877-503-3534 sales.i never had a problem with them and believe me i have had to use it several times on one fridge.i just checked with them the other day and they told me they cover sz+ wolf. they just need the brand/model and serial # and they will give you a quote. i just payed $266 for three years everything covered no ded.my factory one ran out on 12/25/08 and was able to keep it going w/o lapse as long as it was purchased within 60 days of the old ones exp. date. already used it for another problem with my junk maytag 3 door fridge. i figured it would help sell it when i get my new sz+wolf appliances. hope my rambling helps...
