weak wireless signal or other?

I'm trying to use a laptop about 30 feet from the router. Not a straight shot, since there are a couple walls inbetween.

At best, the link is "poor" or "not-connected", and yet when I view the available networks, it's always 4 out of 5 bars, which should be plenty good to me.

Also, I tried to boost the signal with an omni-directional Belkin high gain antenna attached to the router, but that did no good (zero improvement).

Any advice? This is for a Dell inspiron running win2000. It's a simple 802.11b (D link router and Linksys PCI card).

Since routers usually use 2.4GHz frequency as do many cordless phones, microwave ovens, and the like, are there any of these objects nearby which might be causing interference with the signal?

I also see that you are using one brand of router and another brand of PCI card. Could be these two are not playing nicely together. Probably two of the same brand would work better.

However, my Netgear router is upstairs where my satellite modem sits, and my laptop with built-in Broadcom wireless (different brand here) is downstairs and I always get the full 54MBS signal on the laptop.

Your not alone with signal problems with the D Link router I use a linksys and like it.

lotodig, I don't have the problem you have with weak signal, but I can tell you that some newer phones have much better reception than some older models. However, this isn't true in all cases. I am also with Verizon and have had good service from LG phones. The one I just upgraded from had excellent reception compared to the one prior to it. It is over two years old, but I think that model is still available. It is the LG 8600 and is a flip phone, has a pretty good camera, and the reception was great. Speaker phone was nothing to rave about, but I never used that. I just upgraded to a new phone that has lots of bells and whistles, but I'm still fond of the LG8600. You might see if your local store still has it, or if you can get it through Verizon's online store. I'm sure there are other models that will work well for you. See if Verizon will allow you to try out a model and return it if it doesn't do the job for you.

zep516 - Now that you mention it I have at times (but not at the same time my laptop stopped working on the porch) had modem failures and comcast told me I probably needed to have it replaced. But it works fine for about three weeks and then goes down. So i've been lazy and haven't taken it in to swap it out. Comcast isn't my fav company to deal with. pkponder - I have wracked my brain and the only other thing that I know of that has changed is my ADT system got a trouble light a few weeks ago, maybe around the same time, but ADT told me that checking their records, they haven't had a signal from my home in a year... ADT is also not my favorite company since they continued to bill me. But the security system is wired not wireless, if that makes a difference. It is connected to my Comcast phone service though. mikie - Well, I do have an older, refurbished laptop so that could be possible. There is no way to check the internal reception, is there? And windows update has messed me up on other minor settings before. I will work on the things I have control over like the modem and the ethernet cable and see what happens. You guys (and gal) are awesome.

That sounds like a novel tool for weight loss (keeping the fridge door closed because you're standing against it to use your PC). I can attest to the effectiveness of aluminum foil signal reflectors. They work surprisingly well. Wifi signals are easily blocked by walls, wiring and pipes, furniture, water heaters, and general "stuff" causing obstructions in the signal path. Which is why movement of router or receiver some inches in one direction or another (including up or down) can make a big difference.

By definition, a dry loop has no dial tone nor battery. It is a 'raw' copper pair. HOWEVER, many of the telco's don't do it this way any more, especially as far as DSL is concerned. They charge more for a dry loop implementation. Hence, they may TARIFF DSL 'dry-loop' service as something with battery and perhaps even dial tone, but it's not a dry loop after that. And assigning the line a number is not a surprise either. Where I used to work, it was standard to assign a number to a DSL dry loop. But it was a number you could not dial (1nn-xxxx). It was simply a place holder for the billing system.

Hmmm, come to think of it, I did pick up a used Linksys (.11g) router which I never installed. Maybe it's time to plug that thing in.

How would one swap the router? My current rat's nest is a cable modem to vonage box to D-link router. I suppose I could uninstall the router, install the Linksys software, and plug in the new router. (Hope I have the literature for it.)

Thought I would give an update.

First I upgraded to a Linksys g router and continued with similar weak signal.

Recently I discovered that positioning the router antennae "sideways and perpendicular" to the distant laptop gave a nice signal boost on two distant computers. Worth a try for anyone else having issues.
