How do I find out if my hardware/software will work with Vista?

I need a new computer, I'm still using a 750mhz with Win98SE. It won't defrag and gives the blue screen of death daily.

Want to buy one before end of year because I can write part of it off for my job.

I'm concerned that my printer, ergonomic keyboard, speakers, optical mouse, camera, card reader, usb hub won't work with Vista.

I really do not want to buy all new. They all work fine, it is just the CPU and monitor that are giving me problems.

I also have Office 2000 Pro and cannot afford to buy a newer version and am afraid it won't work with Vista.

Is there a website to check? I don't want to find out after buying a new computer. I think I really would prefer XP.

Use my link below, I used the Google search so you can seek alternate advice than just MS. MS will require you to install a small program it needs to look around your computer to assess it. Then you can look at the different flavours of Vista too.

It seems possible your printer will not work even if the compatibility test shows it will.

If you would really prefer xp Dell offers their business computers with xp. If you aren't interested in dell you might be able to find another manufacturer that would offer xp.

I can think of 2 companies that made clear spans with full ridge vents. One was Florian and the other Texas greenhouse. And both made curved roofs. The metal braces look like one of the two companies. These are very expensive because of being clearspan. No center poles for bracing. You can have the glass made at any glass shop. For the curves it will be a Lexan type panel. These were rarely made of glass but some better ones were. You used to be able to price it yourself at Florian just to get an estimate. Florian has a video on putting one together that might help. It would help to pre-label the parts before he takes it down. And draw youself a plan of how it goes back together. You may have to replace the rubber seal if it has one. Greenhouse companies come and go. But these two are been around for years. Look at the web site and it will give you ideas. I think the idea of a SE MA swap is great, too and I appreciate how far our SE friends have been traveling. I hope, however, that we continue to have two swaps- Sp and F- and that one will be "up here" around Boston, AND that our Cape area friends will come this way, despite the drive! Can you see I'm feeling a bit anxious about the group (as fluid as it is) hanging in together? Rationally, my anxiety makes little sense because the reason people come or don't are so varied but even so, sometimes thinking about change is difficult. Interesting review of Vista and MS, as a company, in todays NY Times. Although they feel Vista has a long way to go, the writer built his own machine from scratch and marvels at how MS managed to build an operating system which can coordinate all these different components of software and get them to work together. I'm not explaining it right, but he said Apple never did that. They only use their own stuff which made their life simple. MS built their Windows OS to act like a 'Conductor' which runs an orchestra of players who write different music. He is not promoting MS, but rather finds it amazing that Windows works as smoothly as it does. Jane

Michelle, the very fact that I did not comment on that thread gave me the opportunity to comment on your unfair statement about others giving you advice. There was a good cross section of replies, none of which were written with any malicious intent as I feel sure you realise. My point is that many people come here for help and that help is given freely by anyone who feels they have the answer. Answering questions is great because it allows that person to grow computer wise as well as help someone who has a problem. Your post suggested to me that you installed the Kazaa program based on flawed information when in fact, nothing of the kind took place. You already owned the program and only you could have clicked the "Install now" button. I suspect you installed it on what seems a new Vista computer or Vista install without taking the precaution of installing all the needed safety nets first. Just my thoughts of course. You too could have helped the many lurkers here in your latest post by explaining how you removed the malware rather than simply say it is now gone. We all help each other and any reply explaining how a problem was solved can only be beneficial to all readers.

It is hard to say if the hardware will work for sure with vista. One way to check would be to go to the manufacturer's site for each piece that you have and see if they have drivers for vista. Most things like the hub and speakers work with everything.

I do have an option that may work out even better.

Have you ever heard of Ubuntu? It is a flavor of Linux that is very powerful and easy to use. It is free and will run rather nice on that hardware that you mentioned. I have set up a dozen people on it and all but one stayed on it. She only left it because her motherboard went bad and bought a new computer. A mac.

I included a link to either download and burn a copy or to ask them to send you a free cd. If it is your original hard drive, you may want to go buy another one because that might be at the root of your problem, or it could just be spyware or virus problems.

I tried Ubuntu after beta testing vista and have to say that I am happy that I decided not to switch to vista. My camera that wouldn't work with windows unless I downloaded the garbage software works with Linux flawlessly. It is also a good bit faster as well. It comes with a fully compatible word office suite as well. Let me know if you have any more questions. What is there to lose except a little time? If you don't like it, then you can spend the money and buy a new machine. I have to admit that it isn't for everyone. Some people have a need to spend money on things to think that it is a worthy solution. Either way, you have an option if you choose to take a look at it. Good luck with your choice
