How do I remove P2P adware from Vista?

Every time I run Adaware and Spybot they are finding P2PNetworking and AltnetBDE on my system. Nothing I do will get rid of it, I have tried having them quarantined and deleted, I have tried going to System32 and deleting them myself and am denied access. I have even tried restoring my system to a date before these both showed up, nothing works.

I was given false information here that P2P does not load onto Vista, but it has and now it won't go away.

Please walk me through the steps to get rid of this!

Michelle your second paragraph seems very unfair to me if you are referring to this thread. You asked for advice and received a cross section of opinions and you then obviously installed the software. The way that original post read it seems you had the program already and had been using it pre-Vista.

I Googled AltnetBDE and found a number of sites with the fix. However you may find things slightly different as you have Vista. You certainly need to run an online scan, Housecall has a Vista version as does BitDefender

Owbist, that is the thread, but how could I possibly be unfair to you when you never replied to it? Someone did in fact say "Vista does not allow P2P websites." but it wasn't you, no need for you to be defensive about it! I did have Kazaa on my old computer with XP, I wanted to install it on my new computer but it isn't compatible with Vista and wouldn't load so I am not sure where these two pieces of spyware came from.

Thanks, Raven. I'm sure he's behind on lots of stuff. Early in 2009, I had him change his update settings to notify him of updates, but not automatically download. That was to hold off on sp1 (at a time when I think I read here that folks were having trouble with it - but I didn't follow that topic, so didn't realize sp1 had become a good idea and that sp2 followed). We also set it that way bc. his computer was automatically updating and then rebooting when he was in the middle of doing other things. So this was to allow him to time his own downloads and installations. But he just never thought of it - and I didn't think I needed to keep track for him. I do keep track of his Avast, superantispyware, malwarebyte and spywareblaster. Every now and then when he's done surfing I have him leave out the laptop and go ahead and update and scan. I'll have to keep track of more than that, obviously. I got foxit reader on my ancient laptop in my office and love it. It takes so little room and does what I need quickly. Do you like pdf-xchange viewer more than foxit reader? Or does he need to use firefox to use foxit reader? I installed firefox for him - and set up tabs with the places he likes to go (did that in the summer) - but he hasn't used it. He's a bit resistant to tech changes. He balked when I got Tivo's - although he loves it now. He's a musician - and I got him Protools so he could record the music he wrote. That was over 1 1/2 years ago - and he hasn't learned it yet - he's barely scratched the surface. Last spring he bought an Imac bc. it was better for recording music. And now he's finally setting up his den and equipment. I'm hoping he'll actually learn the software this year. I'll take care of the rest for him so the only learning curve he has is Protools (certainly the most challenging of them all). But I digress. I'll check his other updates and run Secunia - I'm pretty sure I already put that on his computer last year. Thanks. Lynn.

deleting cookies does very little to speed up your computer and will require you to login manually to any sites you are a member of, and also will delete any site preferences stored in them. While it certainly hurts nothing, this can be a huge inconvenience. I manually delete cookies, saving the ones from the site i visit frequently. I do this about once every other month. deleting all files in system temp caches (not to be confused with temp internet cache) can be disasterous to software upgrading and removal if they store uninstall files in there. Some software packages use system temps for uninstall and update/upgrade information. It is best to manually clean house in system temp directories/folders and remove nothing for software you currently use. the best ways to make your computer run leaner and faster is to: clean and repair the system registry cut down on the un-needed programs and services that auto-start when you turn on windows defragment your hard drive virus scan to remove all malicious items spyware scan to remove all malicious items delete internet temp files

Hello............it's hard to explain. I DO have a google address bar. If I use the word google in it, the entire site just freezes up. The only way I can get out of there is the reboot. If I would use a word like 'apple', it would take me to those listings.....but I can't open any of the sites, nor can I go back .........therefore, I have to reboot again. This all started a couple of months ago, when I awoke one morning to find BING, and my google was unusable. When my son tried to help..the BING was gone and the GOOGLE was useless. I hope this makes some sense to you. TIA

Sonny and elkimmeg ~ Thank you both for your input: "Heat-wise the vista will serve you well, but if you want continious heat then you will have to get up in the middle of the night to feed it." Point well taken. At that point, the oil burner should kick on until we're up and about in the morning. Middle of the night feedings are reserved only for children, and ours is grown ;o) "At the very least any insert would have to be listed for installation in a prefab fireplace." The Vista is approved for installation in an existing zero-clearance fireplace. "Second how would you sleep at night knowing that much heat is only inches away from combustiable framing." We are removing the wood mantle, replacing it with a bluestone mantel. The closet framing, wall or combustible is 4 feet away from the fireplace/insert. "On the other hand some heatalators were built into proper masonry fireplaces." Ours is built into a proper masonry fireplace. "My question would be before I do anything how safe is my existing setup?" Inspection done and anything that needs to be modified or corrected is being done. "Another thought what precautions have you taken concerning freezing of your pipes?" We are using our oil burner for heat, as well. Since we use our water (hot and cold) on a daily basis the water running through the pipes will never be "stagnant". We also have a propane hot water heater, which is located in the garage/basement. This throws off a certain amount of heat which is close to the cold water pipes. The hot water pipes run from the propane hot water heater. In any event, we will not be as remiss as to let our pipes freeze. We're planning on utilizing both sources of heat (insert and oil), and hopefully it will accomplish our goal of reducing our oil costs dramatically.

Could look in Control Panel/ Security / and find Windows Firewall Settings/ Exceptions and uncheck whatever you don't want coming through.

Install and run Windows Defender

Don't know which P2P network you installed, but they have KazaaBegone and Kazaa Spyware Removal

There is always the Registry, Start/Run/type> regedit

Sure, that statement was wrong, but it is unfair to complain when what you wanted was to install Kazaa.

Michelle, the very fact that I did not comment on that thread gave me the opportunity to comment on your unfair statement about others giving you advice. There was a good cross section of replies, none of which were written with any malicious intent as I feel sure you realise.

My point is that many people come here for help and that help is given freely by anyone who feels they have the answer. Answering questions is great because it allows that person to grow computer wise as well as help someone who has a problem.

Your post suggested to me that you installed the Kazaa program based on flawed information when in fact, nothing of the kind took place. You already owned the program and only you could have clicked the "Install now" button.

I suspect you installed it on what seems a new Vista computer or Vista install without taking the precaution of installing all the needed safety nets first. Just my thoughts of course.

You too could have helped the many lurkers here in your latest post by explaining how you removed the malware rather than simply say it is now gone. We all help each other and any reply explaining how a problem was solved can only be beneficial to all readers.
