Anyone have a alder front door!!??!!

I need to get the front door picked out by the end of the week. I am trying to get the paint squared away and the trim picked out AND I just took a full time job! YIKES!

Does anyone have a alder or knotty alder front door? I am thinking it would look nice with the rustic look of the rock and our cabinets are knotty alder.

Mine is Alder but not the knotty one. It's the same stain as my cabinets; Chestnut.

Note to self; remember to order a bigger doormat! LOL

Oh gosh I love your door! DH is going to get a catalog tomorrow!! I really think an alder door will look good! Thank you for posting the picture!

Resurrecting an old thread - I have been considering painting the door trim the same color as the door. I was happy to see this post that said it was stunning - but I can't find any pictures of this at all (other than some wood doors that have wood trim). Does any one have any pictures of door and trim painted the same color, or is there some design reason why this is rarely done?

In my view it depends upon the cultivar of sasanqua that is selected. It also depends upon the shape of the plant you are looking for to fill the spot. Are you concerned about height? Do you want something conical? or lower? Some are naturally lower growers and take to some minor shearing well. I'm thinking for example of Bonanza, or ShiShi Gashira (actually a hiemalis), or 'Mine-No-Yuki' . Something like Yuletide is more upright and conical. I would certainly not discount a camellia! They are beautiful! I would shop a reputable nursery where the employees know their camellias and they could give you a recommendation for a more compact variety, but you'll have to tell them the shape and size you are needing.

Try wiping a small area with mineral spirits to simulate what the door will look like with a fresh coat. If you need to add color, you might look at gel stains. They do not need to soak into bare wood like oil- or water-based stains do. But you will want to at least rough up the areas to get a dull base and remove any UV damaged old finish. And for me, there is not even a question, I'd remove the door to work on it. And another study that talks briefly about marine varnishes http://www.askhlm.com/Articles/ArticleViewPage/tabid/75/ArticleId/26/Paint-On-A-Clear-Finish.aspx And, by the way, Minwax Helmsman is not in the same class as the real marine varnishes. Poly just has very limited UV resistance. It was the so-called spar urethane used in the first article.

I have a south faced fiberglass faux wood door in my Connecticut house where typical July days can be weeks of 90 s. It is ten years old. I re gel stained, no sanding just cleaned with tsp first once for it turned redder about five years after install with no prior maintenance. I now spend about ten minutes once per year cleaning with tsp and apply poly sealer.. It is very easy to DIY . Much better maintance than my real wood side door and so much prettier than my painted steal back door. People ask me how I have keep my 90 year old door looking so good. Everyone thinks it is the orginal wood door to the house until I tell them.

I would call the building supply stores around you and see what brands they carry. Then you'll at least have a place to start.

Lindy, I don't know how I've missed your door before, it's gorgeous!! Kelly, I know kats has interior alder doors and her exterior french doors are pine (I just read an old thread I'll try to link) but I don't know what her front door is. It's beautiful (of course!!) and hopefully she will chime in on this thread.

gopack, it's El Dorado Stone Fieldledge. The color is Veneto. We also used it on our indoor and outdoor fireplaces with varying colors and techniques of grout. Each one is slightly different. The exterior is a light gray overgrout technique which was supposed to resemble an Old World Style. I love El Dorado.

I have an alder front door. This is a picture of it before the stain.

It was installed and immediately taken down for the remainder of the build to protect it. It's about 4' X 8' high.
I put a mahogany stain on the door to match the corbels/rafter tails under the eaves. My interior doors are all alder upstairs and pine downstairs. These doors match the color of the stain on my cabinets/windows and ceiling beams.
Lindy, on a side note. I was able to find a wood worker to stain all of my windows (remember, they had a polyurethene finish on them from the factory) Whew! :) It has made my home just come together!

Here's mine... no shelf though. I will stain it with jacobean dark stain. It is simple, but we like it.

Our front door is alder. The interior trim is also alder and the interior doors are knotty alder.

Thanks everyone! DH was suppose to stop and get a catalog for the doors. Maybe tomorrow! I love all the pictures!!! I am so glad we went with Alder cabinets!

I'll post mine now that I have them. They are custom built by my builder. They are hand-plained knotty alder and still need the wroght iron scroll work over the glass.

try_hard, Yep, Faux Stone! I feel like a broken record but real stone just isn't used out here much.

Sooner, I saw your thread that you moved but haven't opened it yet..rushing over there to take a peek. Your door is beautiful.

Kellyeng, Wow, so pretty! I wanted the wrought iron too but it just wasn't in the budget. Please post a pic when you get that in so I can drool! LOL

I have picked out the door! I gave the catalog back to the builder or I would scan it in and post it. It almost looks like teach 2007. To be honest, I am kind of forgetting what it looked like! LOL! I looked at soooo many. I do know there is 6 windows at the top of the door! LOL! I guess I will remember when I see it on the house!
