Are all USB Cables alike?

My PC is at least 7yrs old.( running fine using XP) All USB ports are in the back. The USB cable for my digital camera ( which I leave connected for convenience) looks exactly like the one for my new digital photo frame. So I thought I would be able to take the easy way out and just use one cable for both devices. However, my computer won't recognize the new device. The frame works when connected to the AC power uing the memory card. But I want to transfer pics. from the PC to the frame. It is physically impossible for me to crawl around and change the cable, so before I ask my DH to do it I thought I'd ask if the cables should be interchangable. Upon close examination of the box for the Dig. Frame, it looked like it had been previously opened and carefully taped shut. I am wondering if the USB cable connection might have been the problem.

If your comp is that old, the USB ports are probably the 1.1 kind, and not the faster 2. The problem may not be the cable, but your new frame may not work on the older, slower USB ports. Is there anything in the literature or on the box indicating that it works on USB2 rather than USB1.1?

Yes my ports are the 1.1 type. I discovered this when I added the USB cable for Cannon Pixma 500. When scanning there is a message that it would work faster connected to a USB2 port. ( but it works just fine in the 1.1 port) I don't think that is the problem.
I tried connecting the USB cable (connected for use with the camera) to my cell phone and my PC recognized it. I think the problem is probably with the connection on the Digital frame itself.
There is no indication in the "info" with the frame as to whether it need as 1.1 or 2 USB port.

If you had only 2 USB ports, was your other Keyboard plugged into one, or do you have 2USB's and 2 PS2's for hook ups? If you only have 2 USB's and no PS2's then by all means pick a USB HUB and that will add the extra ports that you need. To find a USB 2.0 hub with A/C plugin they might have them at Office Max and Staples and all over, probably even Target. I assumed that when you stated the new keyboard had a USB connection and both were in use...that therefore the older keyboard was connected by a PS2 connection (because if the older keyboard had been disconnected from one of the two USB ports... one would be available). Or did I presume too much...again? Below is a nice example of an electrical plugin/usb plug in at Amazon. Although I can't figure out what those four pegs stuck on top of the box are supposed to be on the picture from a owner. Some hubs just plug into your computer and thereby draw extra electrical energy through it. The better ones plug into your computer but come also with an A/C plug to get the energy needed to run out of a wall socket, instead of drawing the extra through your computer. Just as TomH had suggested. The boys from along time ago made the same suggestion to me with my notebook and they are right. Its looks like Bob14 found your two hidden USB ports! None-the less you will probably want a hub sooner or later anyway. Between speakers, mice, keyboards, printers, external hard drives...and OHYEAH Game Pads!...they fill up fairly quickly. @Diane Brakefield I was reading through some of the older comments, and I just have a question on your Colette rose. Do you recommend it as a climber? Is it pretty free blooming for you or is it rather stingy? I’m just looking for a really pretty climber with nice blooms and likes to flower. I had my heart set on Eden, but after reading some comments on it tending to be stingy in colder climates, I might lower it from the coveted #1 position on my most-wanted list hahaha (if any other cold climate folks have personal favorites they’d recommend, lemme know!)

Bossyvossy, playing music in a car from a thumb drive or SD card (some cars take one, the other, or both), assuming the music files have accurate embedded tags (Title, artist, album, genre, etc) plus album art, should look and have the same controls as playing them on an iPad/iPod/iPhone, or their equivalent Android device or program on a PC. You should be able to choose a playlist by Artist, by Album, by Genre, or a prepared playlist or playlist of everything. I have thumb drives in a Toyota, a VW, and a BMW (all less than 3 years old) and they all look and behave pretty much the same. I've plugged them into rental cars of various other makes and the same has been true. Fast forward or back, skip forward or back, play again, shuffle play, or play in order, etc. Here's a quick image I found showing a track playing on no matter what kind of a device, this is similar to how an auto display would look

Apart from hand-held computer-like devices, I've seen plenty of battery chargers that will force feed secondary batteries at a rate that digs into their life (charge cycles before failure). That has become less of a problem with better charge controller circuits becoming available at an affordable price. With systems that have internal batteries and custom-designed chargers, sometimes fast recharge is necessary so heating in excess of optimum and attendant shorter battery life is tolerated for other gains. Again, no so much anymore today due to better control circuits. The question is, where do cell phone and other portable computer equipment manufacturers fall? Do they advertise a long battery life high up in the phone description, or a short recharge time? Are much publicized cell phone fires partly a consequence of demands for fast recharging? As charge state in any secondary battery that I am familiar with increases, heat output increases (higher internal resistance due to inevitable concentration decreases) so charging has to slow to prevent damage. That means that early fast charging is easy, later is sort of impossible. How many cell phone and tablet buyers understand this kind of limitation vs. a simple recharge time in minutes? If a battery in a device chronically gets more than optimal current in recharge phase, it may last past its warranted date, but still fail significantly sooner than it would at lower recharge rate. Yes, most batteries can handle a lot of noise in the circuit. That is part of the reason you really need to have a battery in place in dirty automotive circuits, they smooth out some of the noise.

Maybe your frame is a returned item that was defective. Do you have a friend with a newer computer who could see if the frame is recognized on something more recent? That might help determine if it's the fault of your computer or the fault of the frame.

It could be you have to plug the cable into
the digital frame first and then into the computer.
I have a digital camera that works like that.

I didn't like having to go behind my computer either
everytime I wanted to hook up/unhook something.
So I bought a USB extension cord and use that.
Now I just plug/unplug into the extension cable on my desk.

Just do a search on Ebay for 'usb extension'.

My question now is: Will having 1.1 ports prevent me from using USB extension cable or hub?
Upon reading the directions one more time I discovered it does say to attach the cable to the frame first. I really didn't think this would make much difference, but it is worth a try. I'd like to invest in a USB extenstion cable or hub anyway, as it seems like that would be useful.
( I would love a flash drive- ports on the back make that next to impossible for me as things are now)

I agree, the frame may have a defect, but I hate to return it without trying a hub or extension cable. I have checked and it appears that most places are out of the Pandigital frame size I have. I like that it has 256MB of memory and will copy a variety of media from a memory card, digital camera or PC

Well, my DH bought me a USB Hub. I installed it and then, in the proper sequence, attached Cable from frame to hub and Voila- it is working. One thing I noticed- the "manual" provides bare bones information. Pandigital's web site gives more detailed information.
