Personally I never get too excited when the defrag appears not to have finished entirely. Most of the files are placed together and that is always good. I assume you did a disk cleanup first to get rid of all the recycle bin, temp files and temp internet files.

Owbist, thanks for your response. I did all that before the defrag. Are those the only boxes you would suggest I check before the Disk Cleanup?

When I used Disk Cleanup I generally selected 2,3,4 and 5 to clean out. These days I use Ccleaner as I feel it does a much better job. I leave the program settings at default and have never had a problem.

On the defrag there is a free program I used to use and many still do as it is a popular program. It is Diskeeper Lite. It may do a better job of defragging, it is certainly a safe program and Majorgeeks is a very safe download site.

Owbist is so right about Disk Cleanup. If you use that tool first and then CCleaner, you will see so much 'stuff' that Disk Cleanup didn't clean. CCleaner does a much better job. I will try Owbist's defrag link. Has to be better than Windows.

CCleaner is an excellent program for diskcleanups. For defrag, I think the support for DLite isnt available anymore.I recommend the full version of Diskeeper (you can check out 30 day trials). It defrags thoroughly the very first time you run it. Best part is, set it to run on automatic mode and go about your work.
Also would be a good idea to run chkdsk prior to defrag.

I use AusLogics disk defrag program on both my computers, and I really do like it. It's fast and gives you a report when finished.

I also use an automatic defragmenter called Diskeeper 2008, it automatically defrags the drives in the background with the system's idle resources. There is a newer version out now, v2009, with even more advanced features such as speeding up most frequently used files, so check it out if you are interested.
