My great-grandma's rose

I have some of my GreatGramma's rose growing in my yard. It is so pretty - I just wanted to share. *too bad you can't smell it, it's heavenly!*

I loved the way the buds were beside the big bloom, like accent diamonds on a diamond ring. LOL Anyway, enjoy.

Lovely, whiteorchid...which variety is that one?

I may do a rose or two again, and one thing for sure is it MUST have a rose fragrance. Maureen

What variety? I'm not sure, can only say it's the passed-down-from-generation-to-generation variety. LOL

It's very hearty, hard to kill, fairly resistant to buggies and disease. It's a rambler-type, does quite well on a trellis.

Hmmmm, mebbe I should post this over on the rose forum at GW and see if anyone there knows! *Now my curiosity is peaked!*

I would love to get her Happy Child but the Austin selection around here is pretty limited. Having said that, I would have a hard time not keeping it for myself! I just saw What A Peach at a local nursery tonight. They had a full table of nice minis in 4" pots for $4.99 and 6"pots for $13.99. No 'what a peach' among them. On the way out I spotted it in a gallon pot. Own root. $21.99. OUCH. A wee bit steep for me right now. I am still not sure if a rose is the way to go, after seeing the yard last night (sorely neglected. ) I am starting to think gardening doesn't blow her hair back. Rose lovers like to give nice rose bushes to fellow rose lovers. Not those who will be near indifferent.

I live in east Texas, 2 hours from Houston. After spotting this bug at night while I was outside near some lights, I found that the June Bug, which is common in our area this time of year, was the culprit who had been chewing on my roses. I use an insecticidal soap spray, cant recall who makes it, but you can get it at Walmart, Lowes. Spray on buds, leaves - this should stop whatever is chewing. As for wilt, the above posts are correct. If you have just planted your roses, they may exhibit wilt for a few days - just keep them well watered - and make sure you didnt plant in a hole that retains water - this can make them wilt. I read on the forum that it is really good to disbud for awhile, let the roses work on growing roots, not blooming. I now disbud all my newly planted roses for a couple of months. Maybe even prune them back a bit so less plant to have to keep moist. I usually prune my roses back a bit before planting. Also, just the heat itself might make them wilt until they get established. Just give them some time, they will probably be fine. Good luck! Judith

Hello again, "Not all climbers are lax in habit; many are upright, as you describe your rose to be." Thank you for this; I have learned something new. It never occured to me that my rose could be a climber because I didn't know that some climbers were sturdy and upright as my rose is. "The clusters of flowers would make me look at the Floribunda category first." I believe you're correct. I posted pictures of a bunch of my flowers in the cottage garden forum gallery, including some of this rose, and a lady there immediately said it was a Eutin (without my having even asked for an ID), like her mother used to grow. I looked up Eutins, and while my specimen looks a bit bedraggled compared to the ones in the pictures I've seen, I do believe that to be my rose. It's certainly the closest I've gotten! Dawn, we have a rose like that at the farm, it was a cutting from Aunt Esther's, a couple of generations ago. It grows way over my head, up to the top of the wood shed, and smells heavenly. I wonder if they are the same type (although mine won't bloom for a month or so, yet).

Ours spread like crazy too, does yours?

Yes, it spreads like wildfire. It's threatening to take over the section of yard I have it planted on. And it outgrew the trellis I had it on, and made it's way to the carport! LOL

Mine smells amazing, too. Could be the same! :)

Wow, it COULD be the same. As soon as mine (well, Dad's) blooms, I'll take a picture as close to the same angle as yours and we can compare, although I don't know what it is either, it's just "Aunt Esther's Rose".

Dawn, that is gorgeous - I love the fact that it is your great-grandma's....one of my favorite memories of my grandma is some kind of rose scented something from avon. she had a whole dresser top filled with those little sampler lipsticks and something that smelled like roses. When I smell a rose "scented" something I always think of her. :-)

Funny thing is, my grandma ate dandelion greens, and never owned a "real" washing machine. She was about as "down home" as you can get, yet I remember those silly lipsticks. I don't think she ever wore them...

Dawn - that's a lovely looking rose. It's similar in colour and shape to David Austin's Mary Rose, but Mary Rose isn't a rambler but rather a shrub rose which grows about 5 ft. tall and wide. Why don't you go over to the rose forum and ask for an ID on it, giving as much information as you can, such as it's growth and blooming characteristics. Does it bloom just once a year or is a repeat bloomer. Also mention the size of the flowers and how many leafs there are to a stem - more than 5 ? I'm sure they'll help you out over there.

Ok Dawn....I checked over there but now you have me confused. Here you say it does quite well on a trellis but over there on the rose forum you say it doesn't climb a trellis. It would be important to know the growth pattern to be able to ID the rose. The colour also looks darker in the new pics. It's very full so it looks like an older type of rose. Really lovely and I can just imagine the beautiful perfume it has. If it was from your great grandmother then I imagine that would predate David Austin's English roses, such as Mary Rose since he was born in 1926.

I'm sure someone over there will know as hopefully there are still some of the experts who were there some years ago when I hung around that forum.

I got the titles wrong over there - labeled my great aunts rose as great grandma's rose, and vice versa. *was posting tired with multiple windows open AND watching Zane!* Got the pics/growth habits right, though.

This rose does quite well on a trellis, when it has one to climb. *DSW took it off the trellis for some reason last summer and then my FIL cut it back VERY harshly, thank god it comes back fast*

I have serious rose envy! Our land is not hospitable to roses; too damp and cold in the winter. I'd love to have a spreading climber but the only way for me to grow roses is as annuals. The winters are harsh and the summers damp with Japanese beetles and deer. So alas, I have to settle for enjoying at yours.

My grandma has wonderful rose bushes; my mom too. The climate in NJ, where I grew up was ideal for them.
