news clips - Firefox vs. Explorer

I cannot view news video clips in Firefox (version 2.0.0.11), so I have to open Internet Explorer whenever I want to do so.

Is there something that can be done to Firefox for this? (Examples are clips from CNN.com, yahoo.com, even philly.com, etc.) Thanks.

On the Toolbar,

Tools>Options>Content>Under File Types select Manage. What does the appearing window report?

Yes, there are at least 2 "extensions" or "add-ons" for Firefox that will let you switch to an IE window right within Firefox, just for the site you can't make work in FF.

In Firefox, going to Tools>Add-ons>Get Extensions and then typing "IE View" in the search window near the top right of the page will bring up something called "IE View Lite" right away. That may work for you. I personally prefer the original IE View by Paul Roub, which you can find several pages down in your search--around p.4 (I am annoyed that they don't list it first!), or go straight to the URL I will attach to this message.

Once you have installed IE View and restarted Firefox, then when you have a site that won't let you view videos or something, just right-click on an empty spot in the page and choose "View this page in IE" from the menu that pops up. You will then get the same page in IE (Notice the IE mark at the upper right or in the URL window.) and the video should work. I often use this feature. If you open the Add-ons box within FF and click on IE View, then click on Options for it, you can also tell FF to always open a particular site in IE View automatically.

I should mention that I just took AOL off my computer after 8 years. I understand AOL leaves bits of itself all over as well. it is moving fast I had posted the below on another thread firefox is on a very fast track in new versions blazing fast in fact. Just read a good article on it. So we can all get used to the new versions coming in very quickly. Firefox 7 is already in alpha and is expected to go to public beta on August 16 around which time Firefox 8 will go to alpha and Version 6 will be officially released. doing these quick updates really mess with the add-ons authors as they try to keep up with the speed of the changes in the new versions. So that leaves us with some of our fave add-ons not working while their authors scramble to keep up. I tend to stick with the version that all my add-ons work with till I am sure which ever new version also has working add ons then I move on.

I'm thinking that not all versions or Javascript are compatible with all versions of Firefox, and/or there are different Java for IE and Firefox. I'm just kind of thinking out loud here. You might try going Here...How do I test whether Java is working on my computer? and checking it. You might also want to use the link there to remove older Versions, and do a new free download from Firefox. And if that doesn't work, I imagine folks at Computer Help might have other suggestions, like starting in safe mode or disabling some things to see what might be the problem.
