"Spyware Doctor"

I have no use for this sort of stuff, but, I came across this this morning:

Listening to the Stones "Exiles On Main Street" or Queen+Paul_Rodgers "Live in the Ukraine" or Green Day "American Idiot" real loud is a much better use of your time than worrying over PC infections.....IMHO it is anyway

Regarding the product I don't know anything about it.

I do find too many users over worry as to infections. Being aware and concerned is appropriate, but to over react is unnecessary, and a waste of time and personal resources.

After the basics of an updated AV, and access to detection/remedial applications if an abnormality is detected the most productive protocols for carefree use of the Internet is awareness, safe surfing and common sense.

The sky is not falling. However, if you do walk on thin ice you may suffer the consequences.

There's a line between prudence and paranoia and I think some folks tend towards the latter. Everything that goes wrong with a computer, isn't the result of malware and viruses. There's a healthy dose of old fashioned user error in the mix and quite frankly some of these "help" programs cause more problems than they solve. It was a month or so back where we had a user, with one of these "help" programs who got a little overzealous editing the registry with predictably disastrous results.

I don't know that Linux is the answer for the average user. It, unfortunately, seems to add a layer of complexity without a good technical support structure. There are also a fair number of users who use their computers for work and their employers require or support only certain applications and even operating systems. If the boss wants your spreadsheet in Excel, Linux isn't much help. Oh sure, you can run a Windows virtual machine inside of Linux but now you need two operating systems.

I played with Linux back in my anti-Microsoft days but once I discovered NT, most of my problems went away.

I went to and read the "linux.oneandoneis2.org" site, and.... gee, don't take it too personal, but, what a crock of s^^^.... It really doesn't have much to offer, other than to act as some sort of a mouth piece for a large proprietary OS systems vendor, there is very, very little useful to offer there.... Dang Zep, have you ever actually installed and/or used a Linux variant in the past say....year and a half, maybe?? Or even ever? I would run this scan and see what it says, that is the number of a MS critical update. FREE Online Virus Scan then run this to see if it says you have items on your pc that need updating Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) with out seeing your scan results and knowing exactly what it said about that item there is no way for us to know if it was detecting an exploit of that vulnerability or what it was. This is info on the actual exploit of that MS update. Exploit-MS04-028 Have you been doing all of your windows updates? I would definitely check to make sure that update is on the pc, using the secunia tool will help with that and also tell you of any other items you need to update for security reasons. download update and run this free program, allow it to clean what it finds. it will produce a log file you can post that here and we can help you with it. if he goes to the link in my post that is labeled Analysis and Malware removal, at LzD, they will assist him in removal, he will need this type of assistance or it will not be gone as you found out previously. The infection will definitely prevent you from trying to install new programs that would try to remove it, that is a normal tactic for these infections, it will also render your current programs to not function properly so it is questionable whether or not your Norton is able to function as it should since the infection has likely altered it. AVAST is free but you can NOT have 2 antivirus programs running on the pc at the same time so unless you have removed the Norton you do not want to install any other antivirus programs. The malwarebytes is ok to install and run and definitely should be run if the infection will allow it. The LzD link I provided can assist in getting the pc to allow the programs to be installed and run. As shown on the siri.urz blog cyber security is one of the current known fake AV infections, it is not easy to eliminate and need the use of specialized programs and tools with analysis. terriks- your solution post made me laugh. My nephew flew from Seatle to LA area and back. He went through normal metal detectors and that was it. I guess it depends on where you go. I think the idea about what to wear is a smart one and I agree that it would be more comfortable too. I wonder if the pins in my toes from my bunionectomy 20yrs ago would cause a second look if I went through the scanner?? I guess they could see the old scars on my toes and see that they have been there a while. I too wonder about the pilots and crew having to go through security all of the time. Of course if I were a bad person and knew they did not have to be screened I would look at using them to carry out my evil doings. I did ask my 13yr old about being patted down and she was not as freaked as I thought she would be. She said she was not thrilled at the thought but did at least understand why they have to do it. She did think that frisking a baby was weird but again, understood the need. I still feel bad for the people who have to do the frisking. I am sure when they first started their careers they did not think this would become such a common part of their jobs. But it also gives them lots of stuff to talk about at the dinner table.

Concerned at an appropriate level is not a negative as it is wise so always feel free to share. Running around like Chicken Little is the negative. Even worse is to professing a cavalier attitude which is reckless.

Many people don't know that Microsoft operating systems come with a built-in virus scanner going back to Windows XP. They would prefer that third-party companies make their own software instead of informing the public as to their own free solution. In any case, it's called "MRT" which stands for Malicious Removal Tool. Simply type in MRT into the Run box if using Windows XP, or type it into the search box (in Start) if using Windows Vista or Windows 7.

everyone that does regular windows updates uses the malicious removal tool, however it is not meant to be a tool to depend on as an antivirus program it is specific to individual threats which it scans for and eliminates. In the literature linked it even specifically sates it is a spyware removal tool.

What should be done on every pc is a layered approach to protection, a good stand alone updated antivirus program, at least one good antimalware program like malwarebytes, and a good firewall. In addition to that adding spywareblaster, WOT, and doing an occasional online scan are a good idea. And of course making sure every thing on the pc is fully updated including things like java, adobe, flash etc. Being behind a good router with built in hardware firewall is additional layered protection. And practicing safe Hex, know where you go!
