hibernation?

My computer has done something crazy twice. My APC puts a message that it need to go into hibernation. This happens as the lites blink. It turns off the computer & it won't come back on till I unplug the main plug from the back of the computer. When it came on tonite (not sure about last time) it returned right where I was which was Paint shop pro. Any idea why this strange thing is happening?

My computer has XP media center edition version 2002 & I have 960 MB ram ..2.21 GHz. If there is anything else U need to know let me know.

What is APC? Laptop or Desktop? That is an odd reading for your ram amount where are you reading that amount? You should read the ram here "Right click my computer choose properties let us know what the ram amount is. It looks like you should show 1024 MB even if 64MB is used for video I think windows should show full amount available (1024).

Zep that is where I am getting the Ram & it says 960 MB.
I can't seem to find where I have free ram. When I used windows 98 it told me how much FREE ram I had.

Maybe I used the wrong letters.. APC is the battery backup I have. It should kick in & give me a few minutes to shut down properly if the lights go out. My computer is a desktop.

I use firefox & keep quite a few tabs open.. could that be the problem?

I remember years ago on the old doss computer we only had 8 MB of ram & later put in 8 more.. I paid $200 for that extra ram... How things have changed.

Carol, we use Critter Control and I believe they have locations in Rhode Island. Chucks are the only thing we call them in for. They bait the traps with lettuce, apples, etc. but they also scent the trap with some sort of pheromone. Have to say it doesn't smell too pleasant but better luck than just food. They will also set a kill trap if necessary. You have to make sure no neighborhood pets can get at it though. Not pretty, but effective. I have learned a bit about woodchucks since we've had them visiting just about every year. The trapper told me that they are a bit nomadic and will just take off sometimes to find another spot to hang out. We had one earlier this year, set a trap and it was not interested. I kept messing with the trap right in front of the burrow. Banging it around every day, adding bait, etc......i think it got fed up with all the racket going on around its home and it vacated. First year I've had hollyhocks!! LOL! Hoping it won't come back for its winter nap though. We had 2 last year. One was small, but our neighbors got the other one. It weighed 42 pounds! It seriously looked like a huge beaver in my cottage garden. Dreadful sight when I know how much that pig must have to eat! Good luck!

Just wanted to pop in and say, no, I am not in hibernation. I actually check the forum at least every other day, there just hasn't been anything in which I could add my two cents. That and since around February my back has been giving me more fits than usual, so I haven't been able to spend as much time working the beds as I would have liked, but I do get out there when I can. It has been more or less dry around here with the storms going by us more than passing over us. When we do get rain, it is a quick downpour that doesn't do a lot in the way of hydrating the ground. On one hand, many of my plants were chosen to handle this type of weather and they are doing fine. On the other hand, some plants that could stand a bit more rain, bananas, tomatoes and other 'crop' plants, aren't performing as well as they could. The issues with my back means I haven't been lugging around the water cans like I have in the past and I sometimes wish I had set up automagic drip systems... though our water has had unusually high amounts of chlorine in it. I lost all the fish in my pond from a light topping off (that never before bothered them) and we even lost one of our cockatiels. We have a new park manager and I think he is overdoing the chlorine, but a recent water survey from the park owner says the chlorine is 'within norms'. We've installed water filters to remove the chlorine from our drinking water and I am thinking about adding a whole-house filter. So there you go, a quickish update from Waypoint.

Bears coming out of Hibernation

NH Fish & Game says to take feeders down by April 1. We usually see a mother bear and cubs in the spring and then usually not again although at one 4th of July party a bear strolled along the stone wall maybe 200 yards away in the middle of the day. The UPS guy says he always checks the area near our house where the woods meet a marshy meadow. He has video of cubs scrambling up a tree. We have watched cubs playing while mama made work of something near the stone wall, perhaps an insect nest. Across the road a bear tore a dead tree apart to get insects. We have never had a problem with one coming to our compost bins but I usually top kitchen scraps with a thick layer of grass clippings or leaves. That said, a gardening acquaintance in a very rural area of New London (last house on a dirt road) had a bear tear into her garden shed to get the bird seed. We also have deer and other wildlife that usually stay away from the house. Maybe they just have more wild food available. I have more trouble with voles and chipmunks doing damage to the vegetable garden. One time we did not give permission for someone to train his bear dogs on our property. Of course, the dogs didn't know property bounds. Someone was camping next to the river and the dogs chased the bear towards them. Upon seeing the people, the bear jumped into the river. The farmer used to plan corn in the field on the other side of the stone wall and we used to see more wildlife then. It's a hayfield now so we usually only see deer and one porcupine. Even the wild turkeys have stopped visiting and they used to roost in the pines along the edge of the field.

If it were dead it seems to me it would be decomposing. Does it smell bad?

Two things to look for...
1. Overheating
2. Virus

Overheating can be caused by a power supply fan that
has worn out and slowed or quit running.

Sounds like the UPS is switching it to Hybernate most likely because there is a power problem. Perhaps turn off the computer and push the test switch on the UPS.

I guess I need to leave it off for awhile so it can cool down till I can get it looked at. Yesterday it happened when the lites blinked. I think that is the same way it happened last time. So far this only happened twice but that is too much. I don't see a test button but do see a reset one..
Mine says APC on it so that must be the company name.
I have AVG virus detector & it scans every week so I hope it isn't a virus plus I don't open unknown e-mails. I do realize there is other ways to get a virus.

Also do not connect the battery back up (APC) into a surge protector device it should plug directly into the wall, this is a common mistake made, you APC has a built in surge protector I'm sure. Plugging the (APC) into a surge protector would create 2 surge protectors on the circuit that will conflict with each other.

Zep it is plugged directly into the wall outlet. I do have an older one with a few things like the printer plugged into it BUT it is also plugged into a separate outlet. The battery in the 2nd is dead I'm sure but is still a serge protector.
They aren't connected in anyway.
