Unresponsive Script?

I keep getting that message and sometimes Firefox crashes. It only happens when checking emails. I tried googling but didn't find much info. Not sure what is going on.

What I read is it is something that hangs at start-up? I don't know how to find what the problem is. I removed add ons that I thought could be causing it but the problem hasn't stopped.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I see that periodically (I don't use Avast), it's a hiccup of some kind of in the underlying code being executed.

I click continue and ignore it.

I've observed more frequent erratic browser behavior in recent months (Chrome and Firefox). Who knows what or why? I view it in a similar way as a one-time flicker in a light bulb, if it continues to work one can move on and forget about it until something real happens.

Found out that many people were having the same problem as me across the Web. They call it the WYSIWYG problem because a second page, with a WYSIWYG address, auto loads from cache and then things come to a halt. A couple fixes work for some but not everyone. The very weird thing about it is it affects very few websites. GardenWeb was the only site I had a problem with. I did a workaround by using IE. Today I found out that Firefox quit updating version 3 as of April 24. So to protect myself from bad websites, I had to upgrade. Firefox's new version system is up to version 12 now. Loaded it and now GardenWeb seems to be working fine. Just gotta get used to the new Firefox look now. So then I tried to post the above and it would not work. Mia, I think it is a conspiracy. My husband kind of tricked me to go look at the 2012 Equinox because he thought I might like to have a newer one. The salesman quickly grabbed the keys and brought one up to the front for me to drive. I didn't drive it but I did get in and look. When we got the one I have now, I had six grandchildren here for a few days, and they ran an TV ad for zero percent financing in Joplin. He wanted me to go right then and find one. I had already driven one and thought they were OK, but we had just bought a new truck, so I wasn't looking for a car. He said what do you want on the car. Since we live in an area with quite a few hills, I didn't want to give up my four-wheel drive. My mother was still living at the time and I was having to make a lot of 300 mile trips so I said I wanted cruise control. He called from the dealer and told me they had two left with four wheel drive and cruise control. He told me the two colors they had, and I picked one. You can see how really excited I get over a new car. Needless to say, he has liked it a lot better than I have, but it's OK. LOL Now GardenWeb has this big ad, that every time I open a thread that says Chevy Equinox Sale 2012. I'm glad to know that it is on your computer too and that I'm not being targeted. LOL After hearing the forecast for this week, I probably should be shopping for an ark.

Uninstalling Firefox may leave the user profile data intact for a reinstall. Suggest uninstalling again and manually deleting all the profile data. Reinstall, which will then create a new user profile. Backup your bookmarks before uninstalling and deleting the profile, so you can import them into the new profile. There's a backup function (and import function) under Bookmarks / Show All Bookmarks. I had a situation recently in which Firefox stopped working with my online banking billpay service. The page would load with no errors but blank. IE worked OK but I refuse to use IE. Just my local bank. Three credit card accounts elsewhere, brokerage account, and other secure sites worked OK. Local bank worked OK with the Firefox Default user, which is not the profile I use for myself. I keep Default bare with no add-ons or bookmarks saved. Apparently something went awry in my user profile. I created a new profile (without reinstalling), copied bookmarks to it from my previous profile, reinstalled my add-ons, and that solved the problem.

I do have Avast running. As Snidely said I've been ignoring it but it does crash FF now. Doesn't happen every time but seems to be happening more often and it is getting very annoying.

Thought there might be a quick fix.

This error is probably caused by the "Avast Online Security" extension that you may have installed. try to keep it disabled for a while and see if the problem is still occurring...

That's what chuggerguy was getting at. Also the word chrome above has nothing to with the chrome browser, in case there is confusion there.

So check the Firefox extension for the Avast item and disable it for a few days.

Thanks all. Just had a weird thing happen. I started up the computer and Avast popped up saying an update was needed. I clicked update and it proceeded to install. I knew it wasn't a normal update as it was setting a Restore Point and so on. Then it asked to restart the computer. After restarting, I logged on and the computer crashed got this window:

Sorry, I took a photo of it with my phone as I couldn't do anything with the computer except to shut it down.

I tried to restart and the same window came up. I restarted in Safe Mode and uninstalled Avast. Went to MSE and installed that.

I'm assuming the update to Avast caused the problem. So far the computer is running normally. I'll have to do something else eventually, as this is XP and the MSE page told me it was ending support for XP. So, I'll have to find something else.
