need help restarting my computer please

Dell Dimension 4500 Series, Windows XP, IE6.

It froze up I tried to do (Alt Ctrl Delete) that did nothing.So the only way I could shut it down was by pushing the button. When I tried to start it back up it will not start. I get the first screen that starts with

and ends with

Primary Master Hard Disk Error

Press to Run SETUP

well when I do that I get

Dell Dimension 4500 Series SETUP page and I have no ideal what to do next. Please can someone help this old unlearned GGGrandma with very simple instructions. thanks so much Darlene

Does not sound good, sounds like your hard drive has failed,
Are you getting an Error # if so please post it.

I'd say Automatic Updates are set to run at 3:00am daily, and then your computer auto restarts after the updates to install some of them. Check Control Panel > Security Center > Automatic Updates.

I agree with Raven here, I would not be taking a Celeron computer in for repair. That might well cost half the price of a new computer. You don't have a friend, neighbour or relative who might loan you their Windows XP CD? Explain to them that you do not need the license number as your license sticker on the side of the computer case is the one you would enter as you install XP. That sticker number is tied to the motherboard in your computer. (I suspect that if you have XP Home then you would need an XP Home CD) Recovery disks are bought at the time of the computer purchase. Or this is more often just a separate partition on your hard drive and the buyer should create a set of recovery disks. This includes all the 'free' extras the computer maker adds on. The XP CD is just that, a copy of Windows XP with nothing added As a side note you may want to suggest to Dad that he creates a set of recovery disks for his machine in case he runs into problems too at some future point.

Her husband is dying from ALS and I don't ask her computer questions because she just isn't thinking computer right now..she mentioned that this had happened and was a little upset about it, so I thought I'd ask and see what you all thought. I don't know about SP3 with her...if it comes in automatically, now...she "might" be having a problem with that. Awww..yes, and it could be after updates. If she mentions it again, I'll see what she says...and if it's happening any more.

I have both One Drive and iCloud installed. I own a PC and an iPad and iPhone. I was told by an MS person I had to save received documents twice by, once in One Drive and again in my libraries. So two manual saves. I learned just recently Microsoft will save to both places automatically. I can now sync my pics from my iPhone to the PC in one library called PC>pics and don't have duplicate places. I also don't want folders in folders so all the pictures are opened and it is simple. The MS guy who set it up had different pics in several of One Drive/Pics locations and I added to confusion. Up to this point I was saving anything in two places on my PC because I knew no better. You are right I have very little in my saved places on my PC and thought this USB external drive that will work with my HP 2.0 or 3.0 USB will take care of everything but my music on iTunes if you all approved of this particular drive. This is for home use only and I have a lifetime of space. The One Drive is still on here but hidden from me. So this will back up my whole PC computer?

hard drive failure... I might want to look in bios and try to assertain if the hard drive parameters are set correctly or maybe set it to automatic detect.

If that's not it, probably open the case and unplug the cables to the hard drive and reinsert them, both on the hard drive and the motherboard.

Something to start with anyhow.

Could be something as simple as the time is set incorrectly or the cmos battery on the motherboard is old and needs replacing.

wow, off topic, but is anyone else seeing lines through the text in Mikie's post? Also see it in the last 4 lines of Darlene's first post.

Yes the strike throughs are there Pam. I thought in Mikie's case it was his sense of humour :-) but there is nothing in the html coding to suggest strikethrough is called for in either post.
