white screen, pages not loading

The last week or so, when I click on a link or even post this message, I get a white screen which doesn't load. I have to hit the back button which returns the previous screen and then click the link again. Sometimes it goes through, sometimes not. Very annoying. It happens mostly on my netbook but also happens on my desktop. If I leave the white screen, it just stays trying to load and I don't even get a timed out message.

All machines XP, using Firefox, and all updated and clean.

Wondering if its my router or firefox. Any thoughts?

Does the same problem occur with Internet Explorer? What is your Internet service- DSL, cable, dial-up or other? Are you on a network? If yes, do other machines on the network have the same problem? Does this problem occur only on Garden Web? Open a command prompt and type ping www.google.com press enter. What is the average round-trip time? What is the packet loss?

You can unplug the router from the power for 30 seconds, reconnect and allow it to rebuild. Any better?

Also try. Click Start, Run type cmd, click OK
In the new DOS type window type ipconfig /release press Enter on the keyboard then

Click Start, Run type cmd, click OK
In the new DOS type window type ipconfig /renew press Enter on the keyboard. NOTE - the space between ipconfig and / but no other spaces.

Also what happens when you try surfing using IE?

Juliet, yes, his gardens are very near Birmingham, it's a half hour train ride from there. Even in late August it should be pretty spectacular. Wollerton Old Hall is covered with buds. I've not seen a single bloom yet "in real life", so I've got my fingers crossed. I think I'm expecting something similar to Scepter'd Isle with a lighter colour. I'll post photos when it blooms. Florence, it's my pleasure, and a treat to share it with others who enjoy the roses! Silverkelt, I do appreciate how lucky I am to live so close! When I lived in California I never dreamed I'd get to visit, and now I can walk out of my door, get on a train, and be there in just over two hours. I wonder what I should do this weekend?? LOL. Jumbojimmy, the roses in most of the pictures of the greenhouses are "potential" new Austins, either for garden or cut flowers, so I'm pretty sure we wouldn't know any of them already. If you like button eyes, you should consider Sister Elizabeth and Eglantyne. I thin Sister Elizabeth might do very well in your climate, she loved my So. California garden. Krista, it was great fun. I can't tell you how much enjoyment I get out of his creations. I think we are so lucky to have him. He lives in a house on the grounds, and the tour guide told us that he still comes out every morning and walks through the gardens, taking notes, commenting, and finding improvements. He still works in the breeding and selecting and is very much the man we can thank for these roses. So.. thank you very much Mr. Austin! Kristin, I did spend hours there. We arrived at 11 and left when they closed at 5, and I still could have spent many more hours wandering around. It was really fantastic.

Thanks azinoh, All 4 packets were sent/received. Round trip times: Min - 73ms Max - 80 ms Avg - 75 ms I broke down and phone my ISP. They're sending someone tomorrow. Her supervisor told her that my modem shows that it is online but is not "passing". I asked what that meant and she said she'd gotten a smart answer when she asked her supervisor the same thing. Thanks again for helping me. I'll let you know what happens.

I am so very happy to have an old-school top loader again. My front loader finally bit the dust and we didn't even bother to try to have it fixed. It was here in the house when we moved in - we're kicking ourselves for paying extra to keep the set, we should have installed our old ones - and these were awful from day one. The first pain was the kamikaze clothing that leapt out from both washer and dryer when the door opened or you pulled something big out. It sucks that something you've just washed has to wait to get cleaned again. Plus, with a bad back, I didn't like bending down so far. It is infuriating that you need to spend extra money on those pedestals to raise them up, and laundry baskets won't fit under either door without them, so, again, when the door opens, things can hit the floor, which is horrible. The machines come out of the box with this huge flaw and you need to spend $150.00 minimum to make them work as they should. They should just be taller from the outset. Also, I like pulling things up out of the washer and then putting them straight into the dryer without having clean wet clothes go into a basket that has previously had dirty clothes in it. Then came the smell. Now it's possible that the previous owner pre-fouled the thing, but that gasket? Where water ALWAYS was? Yak. Mold city. No amount of bleach and cleaning would keep this thing clean. My clothing is now much cleaner after just a week of having a top loader again. I'm very sensitive to detergent left in fabrics, and mine are once again clean and my towels are far more absorbent. It's possible that a new machine, for way more money than I just paid for my new GE top loader, might be better, but we didn't want to spend that much and are happy to have the old style machine back.

I AM painting them myself. So far in the new house (we bought it in February) I have painted Formal Living room which was pink and we turned into our dining room - it's now Meditation by BM BEFORE AFTER Dining room which was burgundy lower and a pinkish gray top. Turning that into my READING ROOM. It's now Van Buren by BM BEFORE AFTER DESIGN BOARD FOR THIS ROOM: Foyer was yellow, it's now Coastal Fog by BM BEFORE AFTER Hearth room (with the cast iron fireplace) was yellow with notty pine wainscoting is now Bershire Beige by BM with Decorators White by BM on the wainscot, trim and bay window. BEFORE AFTER And the deck which was some a wood stain is now a BM solid in Dark Slate (plus we added on to it) BEFORE Plus a ton of landscaping - but that's a story for another forum... ;) - not bad since February. It was all DIY.

Thank you all. I will give all a try after the holiday. Will be out of town for a few days. Will take the netbook with me and I'll see how it runs with my daughter's wireless.

The only thing which I changed a month or so ago was to try to network the netbook to my desktop. I wanted to be able to print wireless. My printer is hooked to the desktop and the netbook travels around the house. I wanted to print up recipes. I looked for directions on the web and I know I had to allow file sharing and whatever it said. Never worked and I can't get the netbook to send to my printer. Possible those changes are messing things up. I'll have to look for those directions to undo them. Both computers are having this problem, my other two computers do not. Suspicious. But this just started about a week ago so I'm doubtful.

I'll give IE a try when I get home.

I know I have seen some problems similar to this with the latest firefox update so definitely try IE and see if there is a difference.

If dns settings arent messed up somehow it sounds like maybe index.dat file(s) to me, just a guess.

I might maybe close all browsers and instant messengers and go to Internet Options in control panel and clear temp internet files cache there and might as well while in control panel clear the Java caches too.

Then would run CCleaner to clear them again along with making suew the .dat files is checked to clear those.

Reboot and wait for the hard drive to settle down to give time to rebuild/write new clean index.dat(s) before opening any browser.

Wanted to update. Used IE for 2 days and it doesn't happen. I guess its a FF problem. I'd use IE but I'm not familiar with it and can't figure out the toolbar. I'm comfortable with FF and would like to find a fix.

you may want to either go to the latest firefox which is still in beta or revert back to your earlier version.
latest beta version of Firefox
this beta is in preview release and is supposed to be stable you could try it and always go back if you prefer.

Have you tried running your current version in firefox safe mode to see if this happens? it could be one of your add ons or pluggins. go to Start all programs firefox then start firefox safemode.
