AVG second update was pretty small actually, under 200k.

Windows update ,,, had at least one truely critical update, even made the news. It was pretty important as every tom dick and harry learned about the stupid flaw from someone at somewhere who's not too bright.

All those updates help convince me they are on top of things and looking after my computer health :-)

I'm sorry to complain, it just seems AVG updates constantly, and I always download MS updates, but prefer to do it at my time. It created a problem at work by shutting everything down. Just seemed a bit heavy-handed this time.

I have windows update set to automatic update everyday at 3am.
When it downloads updates during daylight hours it always puts the little yellow security shield icon in the system tray & pops a bubble saying click here to install updates,,, i just x it out until I'm ready to install.

It might bug me every now and then with that bubble message, and if I remember correctly finally it will pop a info box with a checkmark for 'ask me again later' then it quits bugging me, until I shut down.

Then at shutdown it tells you its going to update first & then shut down in the shut down/reboot drop down list. I can change that to just reboot without updating, or shut down without updating .. which I do. Usually when I want to reboot or shutdown I want to do it right now! and carry off my laptop to somewhere else ... not wait around for updates to install.

When the next three am comes around,, its going to install those updates then without asking.

When a user is connected via a DUN it is common practice to turn off the automatic updates. Since most DUNs are minimal bandwidth it is extremely difficult to share surfing with downloading. The responsibility to develop a discipline to check for MS updates is the responsibility of the user. For myself its every Tuesday like clockwork. This week I have already completed the updates sans the collective Media Center. It is 16+MB and take about 48 minutes to download. I will do it first thing Saturday morning (6:30 a.m.) while I am having coffee and reading the paper.

Jane I think your AVG update concern has been created by several small or moderate updates recently being released every day, and because of timing you downloading them as one. Take a peek at the file size in right of the active update window. If there is an entry in parenthesis next to the file size there is more than one file being downloaded.

Thanks all. Mikie I have mine set the same way. This time it wouldn't leave me alone. I kept clicking later, but when I left my desk for a minute, I came back and the computer was shutting down with all my 'stuff' open. I was working on a letter, had my billing software running, radio, etc. I never had that happen before. I always let it update when I'm ready to leave work. This was very insistant.

Well, its done, no damage, just made us all have to wait to get everything up again.

These things always seem to happen when you are pressed for time...
