Soup Pot-Lodge or All Clad?

Hi-I am in great need of a small soup pot. I have a larger one but want a 3 1/2 or 4 quart one. I have narrowed it down to All Clad stainless or a Lodge? Any opinions welcome. This is to replace a 30 year only Reverware that was great but warped. I have, also been using a larger Scan Pan that I have never been thrilled will and have decided that the dark finish changes the looks/taste of the soup.

Um, for me it would be neither. I'd prefer Le Creuset for a soup pot.

So-a friend told me that their Le Creuset and their Lodge perform much the same--Thoughts?

Glad to hear you're going for the "real deal!" My everyday wok is a 16" round carbon steel with metal ears from a local Chinese grocer. I've had a variety of woks in the past & I prefer the small ear versus the long handle because: -- I don't pick up the wok with one hand (many do) therefore... -- ...I find the long unused handle a nuisance -- I like to hang the wok next to the stove by its ear -- I'm squeamish about wood near my big gas flames (I use a wok on a 22K gas burner, the wok rests in the fire) I prefer the 16 over the 14 for everyday use as I use a lot of veggies & I'm a slob tossing in a small wok. But since storage is an issue I'd be careful choosing the size. You'll want a good fit with your heat source & your appetite but as a veteran of many small kitchens (inc current!) I'd consider storage carefully. The carbon steel heats up fast. I have every single ingredient chopped & lined up before I approach the range as it's smoking in seconds. (YMMV)

Mary, I'm very happy with my 11" cuprinox style fry pan. But like you, I've spent time reading all the cookware articles. If there is one pan in your arsenal that you want to be thick and heavy, it would be the frying pan, (at least for some cooking). I think the Demeyere Atlantis skillet would be a great choice because it is lighter,(than copper or iron) but still thick and would never warp at high heat-thanks to the stainless. Good cookware will sometimes make up for a less than perfect heat source. I have a powerful gas range with nice big star shaped burners, so I don't really need the thickest pan. But if you were to sear a steak with a weak burner, you would like a nice thick pan to hold more heat - once you preheat it. Otherwise, the meat would 'suck' the heat out of the thiner pan, before the burner could catch up and supply enough heat to get it hot again. I remember you saying you weren't sure on what you were cooking with, but wanted a good fry pan that's not too heavy. I think the Demeyere would be a good choice, I don't own it but I've seen the fry pan and it looks good.- should be easy to clean and is induction capable. I like the inside silvernox finish as well. Price is tough to swallow, but I saw one on sale that was the floor sample at a Sur La Table store...- so if you look long enough? What do I think about the All Clad copper core stuff? It is bomb proof, and I'm really impressed with it. It's not induction capable, and it's not particularly light (because of the copper). Total thickness at the edge, even with all those plies is not very thick. My guess is that the Demeyere Atlantis would do better as a fry pan, even without the copper, because the aluminum is so thick, - while remaining fairly light. Sure copper heats a little faster.. but the race isn't always won by the fastest and fry pans are one item that thickness and therefore heat capacity is just as important.

I have this griddle pan and LOVE it! I got it as a Christmas present from my hubby and 3 boys. I use it almost exclusively for making pancakes! I think it was more a present for them than me!! They come out nice and brown and if I'm careful when pouring I can make 6 fairly good size cakes at one time. The handles are no problem. I have a gas stove, and don't think it would work as well on a smooth top or coil as it is a little raised in the middle. I would get it, you'll love it. I also use it for family grilled cheese and soup night!

I know it's not in your question, but I prefer Calphalon to All-Clad. I have both - I have a calphalon set I got when I got married 18 years ago and it's still going strong. In fact I love it so much I bought a new set, and took the "old" set to our summer house. I've also bought sets for my mother and MIL for Christmas, and they also love them. I have some all clad as well. I have the 12Q stock pot, various small/medium pots I picked up at the WS outlet or Marshalls, the roasting pan and the large straight sided saute pan. I prefer the calphalon because of the glass (ovenproof) lids. I like being able to SEE the food simmering without having to lift the lid. As for the difference in quality, I see none. I'm sure there might be, but the weight feels similar and I notice absolutely no difference in how food cooks in them. I find that because of the lids, I never use the all clad pots I have (except the stock pot), that is unless I have alot cooking and need two of the same size at one time. I do love the large all clad saute pan, I use it almost every time I cook. I'm not sure if calphalon makes something similar but if they did I'm sure I'd be just as happy with it.

I have Lodge cast iron frying pans (no enamel), but I haven't used a Lodge pot for soup. I prefer enameled cast iron for soup. I also try to avoid food-related items that are made in China because quality control seems to be an issue. I like super heavy pieces as soup pots and the All-Clad isn't as heavy as the Le Creuset. I can't make a direct Lodge vs. Le Creuset comparison because I use them for different things. I'd be worried about tomato soup in an non-enameled iron pot unless the pot was perfectly seasoned. It might get a metallic taste.

I'm not sure if everyone here is on the same page (if so, then sorry), but Lodge does make enameled cast iron cookware.

As to the China sentiment, I do agree to a point. But it also depends on how much you want to spend. You can go to Target and buy a Chinese enameled cast iron pot for 40 bucks, or you can buy an equivalent size Le Creuset (or Staub) pot for about $200 or more. Yet in the end, they will all perform basically the same.

How do I know? Because I own a cheap Target enameled cast iron pot in addition to my Le Creuset and Descoware cookware. The only difference, IMNSHO, is in the attention to detail of the interior and exterior glazing. Other than that, they perform pretty much the same...

I have some some research, as I was hoping to find a pot that is NOT made in China. I found All Clad stainless, Lodge, and Le Creuset. I have never used an emameled cast iron pot but think I would like it more than the stainless as if stainless gets a burn spot it never seems to be right again. So-that is why I am wondering if the Lodge will be as good or even "good enough" as the Le Creuset. Also-I have seen a 3 quart Le Creuset at a discount store recently but it looked just a tad too small, so I have decided on a 3 1/2--this is soup for 2 or 3 with not a lot of left overs...

Lodge enameled cookware is made in China. Check their website for yourself.

Not sure where you got that bit of info, but it's not true.

Personally, I find a 5 or 6 qt. size pot to be the most versatile. If you do get an enameled cast iron pot, you will end up using it for more than soup.

Aniother who seconds the enamel coated cast iron....cheap or expensive it all cooks veryw ell. The cheap chips more easily around the rim where the lid fits....but not sure that the difference is worth the price difference.
Get just one....and you will be buying one in every size!

Ok-you have all sold me on the enamel coated cast iron. I appreciate ALL of you answers. I have really needed new cookware for years and am determined to start picking pieces and this will be my first. I will recheck theLodge site--I looked a few days ago and missed that it is made in China. Thanks

I'm not up on current pricing as my LC is mostly 30+ years old. However, some people have discussed purchases at LC outlet stores and other discounters.

I have a 4 qt target enameled pot and a 9 qt LC and I have been looking for a size in between. I think I may try the Staub that QVC sells. It says it is made in France. It is about a 1/3 of the price of LC. They offer a 5 qt round and a 6 qt oval. I was wanting a 7 qt but I may just get the 6 qt Staub since it is so cheap.

I got a 5 quart round Staub from QVC about 2-3 years ago. I like it; it's nice.

I note that it is a little different from the Staub that you'd find at W-S or SLT. It doesn't have the "basting nubs" on the lid, and the inside is cream-colored instead of black. I suspect it's a bit lighter, too, although it seems plenty heavy enough for my needs. I like the light-colored insides much better than the usual black, and I don't care much about the basting nubs.
