You could try some acetone. But I think its going to take more of an effort. The nice thing about oven cleaner is that it saponifies the oils making them water soluble. Literally turning them into soap. I use to work for a large metal fabricator. We would would bring in rolled SS and run it through a bath of sodium hydroxide(lye) to clean it. It works beautifully. SS is not maintenance-free as many people believe it is. It tarnishes just like any other metal but slower. Oil-based "cleaners" do two things 1. they cover up fingerprints and 2. they slow down oxidation. But if you really want to maintain a brighter SS you must use an acid to clean it. It is just like polishing silver. The problem is you can't use an acid if the is a coating of oil on the metal. That is one of the causes of streaking. So in summary. Once you strip the oil off with an alkaline based cleaner then you can use the alcohol for everyday cleaning. Every once in a while, use a weak acid to remove the tarnish. Even vinegar might work if you do it frequently. I do not. So I resort to barkeepers. Which is a stronger acid. If it is good quality SS there should be no problem Kitchen grease is very tenacious. Unless you clean everyday, standard soap water is simply not strong enough. Although you could try some laundry detergent and VERY hot water. That might remove the oils. BTW if there is any printing on the surface of the metal DO NOT use acetone or Barkeepers. It will strip it right off. The key is not to start with Oil based "cleaners". There is enough oil floating around your kitchen already. There is no need to add insult to injury. Kind of makes you want to go back to the old glass front ovens and vinyl refrigerators. :) Sorry for the length!
