Unplug DSL ?

Hi,

I'm a nervous new-to-dsl user. My modem and phone line are right up on the computer desk shelf in front of me and, I have to admit, I'm tempted to unplug it for all the time I intend to be away from the computer (and overnight). I guess the idea of being "connected all the time" is a little unnerving, what with viruses, hacking, etc. So, I have two related questions:

1. Am I, in fact, more vulnerable to such things while I'm 'offline' (where my computer is usually in 'hibernation') ?

2. Is there any harm in my unplugging the phone line and/or turning off the modem frequently, if I'm paranoid enough to do so ?

Thanks for any comments !

Scott
