Zerowater water filter--any experience?

I found this at HD and wrote the company to ask whether the filter gets *fluoride* out, since that is one of our main concerns with our local drinking water (no arguments, please; it's our decision and that's what we're looking for). I got the reply back that it *does* get fluoride out, which makes it unique, in my experience...

Does anyone have any feedback about this system? Or about the probability that the fluoride can indeed be gotten out of the water? Or any info about any other filtering systems that can get the fluoride out? Thanks in advance.

I'm always leery of any product that uses phrases like, "4 times the technology," or "patented process" when they won't tell you anything about that technology. If it is truly patented, there is no reason they can't tell you what it is, unless they are trying to hide something.

I do know that there are three methods to remove fluoride. Reverse osmosis, distillation, or activated alumina. Of those, activated alumina is probably the most effective, but the replacement cartridges are pricey. Also, make sure you purchase a 2-cartridge system. The first cartridge removes fluorine, the second is a carbon filter to remove any activated alumina from your water. RO is less effective on fluorine, but still pretty good, and requires a bit less attention on your partin Distillation is more work for you and takes a long time - not my favorite method to purify water.

alice, thanks so much for the detailed answer. I have *no* knowledge in this area so I really appreciate the background.

This is what they say about the technology (on the "technology" page):

ZeroWater has four technologies designed to remove contaminants from multiple categories.
These four technologies are utilized in a five stage filtration process.

STAGE 1

* A 20 to 50 micron filter designed to remove suspended solids such as dust and rust that make your water appear cloudy.

STAGE 2

* A two component, dual layer, system designed primarily for organic contaminants.

STAGE 3

* A water distributor screen that also removes suspended solids.

STAGE 4

* Speciality resins designed for inorganic compounds, such as metals and nonmetals, as well as radiological contaminants.

STAGE 5

* A 1 micron filter designed to removed suspended solids.

Would stage 4 relate to the fluoride removal process?

I'll also be looking for an activated alumina system...

Nunyabiz: Never thought of that- it is a great idea. We do not have a Keurig though. My husband would like one but I don't really like how big they are and I am a tea drinker so coffee is not my thing. The idea for the instant hot started when my friend told me about it and then I mentioned it to my husband. He said "if we had one would that mean no more tea kettle on the stove?" I said yes. He is the cook in the family and hates the kettle on the stove. Then we decided to forgo the water dispenser on the refrig door for asthetic reasons and I figured I could get one at the sink which filtered water. Now I am searching for the best one to give me hot water, and cold filtered water as well. If I cannot find a GOOD one that does both I will resort to only cold filtered water at the sink. I do not want to buy plastic water bottles and that water is not regulated anyway so the quality isn't much better than tap. I don't really want to go back to a brita or Pure filter in a gallon container since it is a pain and everyone always forgets or does not want to change the filter. Any recommendations for either the Hot and cold filtered water or just a cold filtered water? I do not mean a whole house system or RO system. Just an under the sink for drinking water with a dispenser at the kitchen sink.

I'm against eliminating chlorine (or equivalent) in the home water supply. Anti bacterial chemicals are there for a reason... to kill bacteria. If any bacteria gets into your service water in the house it will run rampant and you'll discover it too late. Willing to take that chance with your family? Are you going to inform every person that lives in your house and every person that visits that YOU'VE made this choice for them? You might think about getting them to sign a release. After almost 60 years of drinking fluoridated and chlorinated water I'm no worse for that. I'm in good health and haven't had a cavity in so long I can't remember. I am amused at the bottled water generation now experiencing a resurgence of dental cavities. They have their parents, bottled water, and the know-it-all pundits that have said for decades that fluoride is bad for them and seem to be wrong.. I guess it's just the way I am... I prefer safe water. You said in your first post "Iron isn't an issue neither is chlorine, which is present in a very minute amount". How about a reason to remove the chlorination (or equivalent)?

It's not a faucet. It's a house filter installed on the cold water line to the kitchen, and is located in our utility room (our plumber ran new water lines to the kitchen during the reno, since we'd moved the sink to a different wall, and added a pot filler and water/ice dispensing fridge). Our faucet's just a regular Grohe LadLux cafe. FWIW, I don't drink the water from the sink faucet because I prefer my water to be very cold, so always get ice and water from the fridge dispenser. Also, the fridge has its own filter, so the ice and water is filtered twice.

It's hard for me to say how long it took for him to stop reacting because he's allergic to many things. The problem is for years the docs gave him creams to put on the rashes they always wanted to call eczema (which our fancy schmancy dermatologist admitted just means they don't know what's really wrong...) and we found out he was actually allergic to some of the ingredients in the prescriptions they were giving him. He couldn't use many of the creams and Eucerin was loaded with the one of the offending chemicals. Hopefully you don't share the same multiple sensitivities. But, you may want to consider eliminating all types of soaps, lotions, shampoos, etc until you stop reacting and then begin to add some of them back. Our family uses Dr. Bronners soap for hand soap, my DH uses Yes to Carrots for shampoo/conditioner, we've found that Aveno has been a safe lotion for him and we can't use any dish detergent except for Trader Joes. Once he begins to break out, if he goes through an entire series of steroids, the rash gets under control and we've usually pinpointed what he reacted to and have eliminated it. However, after his last patch test, without steroids, some of the spots he reacted to lasted several months easy. Right now we think he's reacting to a different brand of shock we used in our pool. Something that simple will cause weeks and weeks of misery. If you can, I would really suggest getting the extensive patch testing done. I hope switching detergents helps you! That was our first step several years ago and we're still experimenting! :)

You know, reading more about them gives me a bad vibe, just instinctively--the style of marketing, etc. I think I'll avoid them.

Here is a link to a company I have used many times. They sell nothing but water filtration equipment, but make no 'magical' claims.

Their FC-011 cartridge is a flouride removal cartridge. Note that you will need a least a dual cartridge system for proper filtration.
