I was doing the same thing today, I got my husband a new Acer Aspire Laptop for Christmas and it came loaded with McAfee so I had to use that removal tool and clear it out and some other junk I did not want on there. I just wish they would come with the OS and little else.

I am having to learn windows 7 and I tell ya it is easier for me to work with linux than 7 whew it is stressing my old brain to find where stuff is.

I was able to remove Norton, MS Works and Office and got all my security programs installed first thing. I tried Thunderbird, and even though I tried to duplicate the settings from my desktop computer, I was having a problem with the smtp in my outgoing, so I just decided to take bee4mee's advice and use webmail.

I want to install something to edit photos with. I have an ancient Olympus program that I like for quick edits (resizing, cropping, etc). I copied it from the disk onto a flash drive(using the Send to command), but I don't know how or where to put it on the notebook. I need to know the same thing for Microsoft Works 2000, please. Also, at the end when I've transferred it, how do I remove it from the flash drive?

raven, your husband will be happy to have his new Acer Aspire laptop. He'll be busy with it all day on Christmas. :) Do you think you will like Windows 7 when you get used to it?

You could try downloading Picasa from Google or IrfanView, both free and can be used for basic editing. Picassa will also find your pictures for you.

Pam, Would you mind explaining how you used the Norton removal tool by using a flash drive? Does that mean you didn't have to download the removal tool into your computer then? I'd prefer that, I think, so I'm curious. Or maybe I'm confused. : P Thanks.

I like Joan's suggestion as to the applications she shares. I use both in my rare photo publishing, and there are several others out there which are free and quite capable.

As far as the "ancient" Olympus application prepare yourself for the potential of it not working on the new system. Even if it still does, please give some thought to trying out these other applications. You might enjoy them. They are both available at filehippo.com.

I used the McAfee removal tool by a flash drive, I went to the download page for it, saved the file to my desktop pc (did not open or activate it), inserted my flash drive, moved the removal tool file to the flash drive(right click on the file select send to and chose my flash drive), used the safely remove icon to remove the flash drive, put the flash drive into my laptop, saved the file from it to the laptop, safely removed the flash drive, went to the file on the laptop and used it from there.

I'm sorry I didn't make it back to answer your question. Flash drives are new to me and I'm still stumbling with it. I'm glad raven answered you quickly.

pf, I didn't see raven's response so thank you for alerting me to it. Raven - thank you for the explanation. I've actually never used a flash drive before, so I really appreciate the details.
