Bloatware Removal Software

I ordered a new desktop with Win8 to have on hand as a second computer (I just bought an Asus laptop) since my other DT is 10 yrs old and slow as a turtle. When I get it, I will make a recovery disc and also want to remove all the bloatware. Does anyone know of reliable free software to download so I can remove all the crapware that comes on this Dell computer? I know there will be plenty.

Also, should I remove the bloatware first, before making a recovery disc or make the recovery disc first?

The PC Decrapifier Wipes Unwanted Junk from the computer. See link for download.

It does not matter when you make the recovery disk as long as you make one.

I also use decrapifier and it does not matter about when you make the disc it is not making a copy of that it will make a copy of the partition that holds the recovery material. It is a one time thing on most computers.

I like to use ninite to install all the stuff you will be needing because it strips out all the junk they try to slip in on you like toolbars etc.

Just take a look at the WOT rating of xp-vista.com https://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/xp-vista.com and the source of the software Spyhunter that they(xp-vista.com) promote https://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/enigmasoftware.com By the way, in addition to the advice given above, I would recommend using the WOT Firefox add-on. It won't catch everything, but might have helped in this case. **SPAM?**

Don't think I'd call it active protection. Its current version is run once per month when you get updates. Its not running otherwise unless you actually run it manually 'on demand' And you really should not run on demand the version from updates. There's another version for that purpose. I guess this is why it's good not to put all one's eggs in one basket, but use different scans of each type when reasonable (i.e. using online AV scans in addition to using one's preferred full-time AV program). Re: the PC Mag article(s): FWIW, Rubenking praised MBAM -- and I use it myself ! -- but it didn't find the four trojans that the ESET scan did. And my own free Avira AV scan didn't find them either. I'm not sure where trojans fall category-wise: malware or viruses. Or something else. But whatever programs should find them (av or anti-malware), mine didn't. :-( Perhaps I should have also tried AVG just to see if its results would have been better, but I was naturally more concerned with getting rid of whatever was in my computer than with doing AV, anti-malware tests. ;-) So my (albeit limited) experience of having ESET find and remove 4 trojans that MBAM and Avira missed, at least makes me lean in the direction of trusting ESET for future supplementary AV scan purposes. And, of course, I'll try the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool again if necessary. (Since I ran it after the ESET scan, I have no idea if it would have found and removed the 4 trojans as well. And I hope I never have cause to find out in the future !!)

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I went to Windows Update website and checked my history. I see 13 attempts to install the Malicious Software Tool and all failed. There are 4 which succeeded, all the same KB #. All took place on Jul 23. So I guess I am well protected. Zeb, I'm sorry I didn't address your post. When I told the MS Update Website to check for necessary updates, it showed the Malicious Software Tool as necessary and did not say anything about it not being supported. Keeping my fingers crossed. I just dragged out our Win 8 laptop which has been sitting on the shelf collecting dust for 3 years. Trying to get that going and updated. I love my XP even more after spending hours trying to navigate Win 8. XP runs like a dream and all my 'stuff' is on it. I just wish MS would get their act together and stop changing their operating systems and forcing you to throw out computers which run perfectly...what a waste of money and time. Thanks. I just ran decrapifier on the old DT and frankly, it appears I had it in good shape. I appreciate the great suggestions.

Another question: My new Asus LT did not come partitioned. I only have a C drive. My specs are 6GB HD and 750GB Ram. Should I make my own partition for backing up stuff? I do backup my data files on an external HD AND a USB drive, and I did have bootable Win8 recovery media created on USB thumbdrive for the Asus. Is a partition really necessary and why?

Hi debie,

The partition is not necessary, I'd rather back up to the external drive and USB anyway. What if the drive fails? Then you can't get to the partition to get the back ups....

That's what I was thinking too, Joe....just wanted clarification since I had read about partitions. You are always helpful and I truly appreciate that.

You might have some hidden partitions if you look in Drive Management.

Me personally,,, I find it nice to backup to a separate partition so when I bork windows in my laptop(often;), a separate data partition has a nice current system image that not only saves really fast, it is instantly available from f8 and loads really fast.
And with backup for personal files/images, I can always get back the whoops deleted file by simply browsing to just that one folder/file in the backup, or find that file from a week or two ago that I probably shouldn't have deleted. Faster scans and defrags on smaller partitions.

Wow ie10 fixes all my small i's and helps me spell too easy.

What I was referring to is that most computers now come with a separate partition that contains the recovery materials, rather than providing recovery cds.
