Flora UK-- Thanks for your post. I will look up the Fabaceae you mentioned. This other picture is what the little red-tinged seedling looks like grown. It does not shut at night, nor retract when touched. Stray seed does sound entirely possible since the pots have been out all winter and we've had lots of wind and rain. I keep remembering seeing these things when I weed the yard, but I can't remember what it might be. We have palm (not that)and eucalyptis (don't think that's it). This is a semi-arid island (Southern California). I looked up the Fabaceae family--nothing looks familiar. The small seedling has these red-edges of the leaves even when very small. Thanks again. I can always wait a few years and see what it is! Lora

Saw a picture of this on a recent post where it was identified as Papaya.

Where life ends somewhere else it begins again. And this is during the day ...and it's much darker in color than the first original. I just love it. The neighbor lady came over just to see what plant it was. She said she could see the red from her kitchen window. And her house is more than 200 feet away.

Go to your profile, create an Ideabook, and upload your photo(s) into it. Then come back here, click on Houzz Photo underneath the text box, and select which photo you want people to see. That's what I have to do when I'm on my phone using the mobile site. "I never had a problem posting at Garden Web, just here!" In the old GW, uploading photos directly was a relatively new thing. As in it only came about in like 2013 or so. I remember having to upload photos like this. That was a pain in the rear. Rodney
