Avast not supporting XP

I was saddened to read in a recent post that Avast will not support XP after 2009. XP suits me fine so I hate to upgrade. Are there other free, good AV programs that will support XP into the future? Or is there a list somewhere to find this info?

You might look into Microsoft Security Essentials which I am thinking of switching to. Here's a link to a recent thread.

Gee, this is news to me and saddens me, too, as I have depended on AVAST! for a long time. Well, since I've been thinking of trying out MSE, mentioned by Bob, I guess I can go that route, and, as long as Microsoft supports XP I'll be okay.

you can not schedule a scan with Avast like you do some other programs, but the easy way to have it scan is to set the screen saver scan, anytime the screen saver is on the scan starts, it stops when you move the mouse then restarts where it left off when the screen saver starts again, that is how I use mine, if you go to the Avast site there are 2 pdf guides that you should read on how to use Avast and set up your scans and also to choose to do the boot scan or not. Adobe Acrobat (PDF) Document How to Install, Configure, and Use Avast Antivirus an excellent guide that answers most questions. It is not a good idea to keep your pc turned off and disconnected from the internet, when you get on it and connect you then are way behind in updates not only for your antivirus but for windows.

Standard support for XP ended in 2009. Support for XP ended on July 27 except for all versions except XP SP3. No further Service Packs will be offered, but security patches will be provided for XP SP3 until 2014 (extended support).

Just keep right on using the computer is my suggestion. You need to have something besides your anti virus program unless it is a 'cure all' type program covering virii and malware. Something like the free Malwarebytes will do you proud. Be very sure to watch as you install to stay with the free version - unless you would like the pro version of course. After April just pay a little more attention to running a virus scan and a malware scan periodically and you'll do fine. The browser you use has nothing to do with XP. Your XP is the operating system.

@chuggerguy I almost downloaded another distro recommended for XP users since it's supposed to have a very similar desktop. It's called Zorin OS. "A general-use distribution that mimics the look, feel, and functionality of Windows. This is geared for those who prefer the Windows interface or need an easier way to transition from Windows to Linux. Based on: Ubuntu." My son has an old Dell laptop that has only 256MB RAM, so Puppy Linux would be great to try on that one. Yes, I'll try several before deciding which one to actually install. BTW, I did boot into Mint last evening, and at first was totally lost. However, I soon found the start menu, etc., so I am anxious to give it a try.

Where did OP get this information? I just searched Alwil's website and can find no mention of the free edition not supporting Windows XP at any time. In fact, it still supports Windows 95/98 and ME. So I would like to know if this is really true.

Don't see any mention about this anywhere! If it were true it would be all over google and forums... I would think....

nope have not heard any such thing and agree zep it would be on the security forums if they had made that announcement I would think. AVAST has been excellent in continuing support for the older Operating systems so I would not think they would drop xp any time soon.

This is from the AVAST home page no mention at all of xp which is what I suspected.

Note: The operating systems Windows 95/98/Me/NT4 will be supported until the end of 2009.
