Has any one gotten Windows 8 yet? Looks nice to me and wanted to check it out before I bought it. Do you like it?

I dual booted with windows 7 and Windows 8 Consumer Preview edition for a couple of months and didn't really get a favorable impression of Windows 8. If you are used to a tablet or other touch screen device you may have an easier time adjusting to Win 8 than I did. There is no start button but a start screen. The usual windows accessories are not there. No wordpad or notepad or calculator, etc. You have to download those things as apps maybe paying for them - I don't know about that. I really don't see how anyone could use it full time without a touch screen monitor but maybe that's because I'm too old and set in my ways. In a short summary of my feelings, I can buy Windows 8 pro upgrade for $14.95 if I do so before Jan. 31. Right now I don't plan on buying it.

The basic Windows accessories are still included. Once you find them you can pin them to "Start".

I hadn't booted Win 8 since this thread so I reckon I wasn't really that impressed either.

Here's an MS how-to article about Search in File Explorer : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/search-file-explorer You might want to install one of the apps - like Classic Shell - that gives you a more Win 7 classic look - that was covered in another thread : http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/comphelp/msg1012450121502.html

Printer for windows 8

Any new printer from a mainstream manufacturer will have Win8 drivers available and fully compatible. I've no direct experience trying to find drivers for Win8, but of course it's the printer manufacturer that produces it and most typically don't bother to do updates for vintage or older models long past being sold. With previous Windows version changes, old version drivers sometimes worked, but maybe not in this case since Win 8 is so different from 7. Have you tried to use a Win 7 driver?

Hi GulfBreeze, Thanks for these extra tips. I checked out the Oriel windows styles. I like them, but we were planning on doing casements for our windows so I am not sure how they would blend with the other windows. Do you think they would? We have made sure many of our windows are lower to the floor. I think your idea of a simulated transom is cool! Can you elaborate a bit more on this idea (i.e. how much of the window would have a grid, what the grid lines would look like, etc) Currently our plan is to leave the grids off most windows. Having the two large windows that flank the french doors fitted with these grids for part of the window might give these two windows a special feature. We are certainly looking into quality windows -- Canada is cold. I appreciate your help! Carol

As well, there are many temp files left from program installations, updates, and so on that are usually not removed automatically. And that is related to the OS, not any browser. CCleaner works well for that. If you're worried about what's going to happen, just use the "Analyze" button and check what's going to be removed before clicking on "Run". CCleaner also has a very good registry cleanup function under "Registry" - used it many times. This post was edited by kbarb on Fri, Jan 16, 15 at 16:06
