What is the format of the picture? Do you have all the plugins installed in Irfanview? Is Irfanview set to be the default viewer for the pertinent format?

Did you right click on the picture and save it to a location, then try to open it with Irfanview?

I ask these questions as every once in a while I get a monster picture from someone and I have to use Irfanview to resize it for viewing.

You probably cannot open the picture in Irfanview unless you save it to your hard drive. Right click on the picture and save it, then you can open in Irfanview if it is a regular format picture.

Actually, it's Outlook Express that I must use to open the file, which has been saved to my hard drive; and I've downloaded all the latest from Irfanview. Does this make a difference? tia, Shel

If you right click on the file, select properties and look at the name of the file What is the file extension? If is a graphic format such as .jpg or .gif you should be able to right click on the file, select open with and from there select Irfanview which should open it.

If you right click on the picture - select Save Picture As - then save it to the Desktop (or whatever location you prefer) - it should be the correct size when you click on it to view. You can also print from there.

it sounds like you saved it in .eml form which would of course require your email client to open it. when you saved it did you right click directly on the picture itself and select save as then save it to your pc hard drive? If it is saving as a .eml you might try changing the file type but if it is saving the entire email I am not sure that will work. I like to use zamzar to change any file types.

A need for an application to convert the photo may not be necessary. First, let's try not to make this any more difficult than it has to be.

Follow the instructions Iowa Girl suggests but before saving click on the arrow head to the right of "Save As Type". From the appearing drop down menu select the jpeg option. Then click save.

Activate Irfanview and locate the file you just created. Hopefully it will open. It still might be too large and require resizing which Irfanview does quite easy without changing the original. The only short coming is you will have to rename the resized file and save it again. I personally created a folder named Stand By on the C:/ drive to temporarily store files.
