another vhs to dvd question

Most of the videos I took of my family don't fill entire VHS tapes. In fact, some of them take up much less than half of the tape. What will happen when I transfer them to DVD? Will the machine automatically stop when it reaches the end of the recording? Or will I use up a DVD with a lot of blank space?

I don't see this issue addressed in the manual. Thanks for your help!

Hello softball_80, Have you checked compatibility? Just an FYI for you. It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well as whether or not it will work with Windows 7. Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibilty.) http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software". There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/default.aspx In any event a lot of the times, Vista drivers will work in lieu of Windows 7 drivers, however, it's not 100%! As stated previously, it's best to have the Windows 7 certified drivers installed. Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/w7itpro. Here you go.... First things first. Decide how many DVD (or VHS) you want in each box. Hold that amount together with a couple rubberbands. This will allow you to take measurements to make your boxes. Use these measurements to make your box, depending on how you will be placing the movies in the boxes. Adding sides 1 and 3 together with the length of the bottom will give you the length to cut for the box. Adding sides 2 and 4 with the width (smaller) of the bottom will give you the width to cut the for the box. Once you have the piece cut out to make your box you'll measure for the height of all sides of the box. Using a ruler and boning tool or back side of a table knife, score along theses lines. They are shown in red above. Once scored clip tabs as shown above by the dotted lines. Now carefully fold along the scored lines folding tabs to the inside or outside of box and gluing them in place. I'd advise folding packing tape over and around the top edge of the box for added stability. It will save the box from fraying with use. I hope this makes sense. Do you have a way to play the film. I was reading about conserving old home movies in a scrapbooking magazine, and one of the ways suggested was to play the film and record it using a video camera. You could also narrate during the filming of it so you would have a soundtrack. They suggested having a good screen and setting up the camera on a tripod. I can take very good video with my digital camera - upload it to my computer, then burn it onto a DVD quite easily.

Ohhhh! Now I see. Okay, yes there's a way to tell. You'll just have to spend a little more time with it. Put the tape in the VCR and then fast forward it. It will count down the minutes of the recorded portion. After the recording on the tape is done, the countdown will stop even though the tape is still fast forwarding. You'll have to convert the reading in minutes to actual time. For example, if the counter says 100 (though it will probably say more), then you know that amounts to 1 hour and 40 minutes. Now you know to record for that long. Not exactly hands free but better than not knowing at all. If it were set up to a TV, you could just set the DVD recorder to record for 1 hour and 40 minutes, or rather from 2:00 (or actual time) til 3:40. I don't know how much your front display shows you without the advantage of a monitor display.

You can put more than one video on a disk to fill it up.
A lot depends on how much you want to compress the video.

You mentioned a user manual.
A user manual for what.
What device are you using to transfer the videos to DVD.

Not sure if you'll come back here for answers but will try anyway.

I'm assuming you are using a stand-alone unit DVD recorder and then playing the VHS tape while the DVD records it. Unless you do it by a timed recording (by setting the start and end record time), you will have to manually stop the DVD recorder when there is no more video to record. Otherwise, yes, it will continue to run and record blank space. I'm not familiar with any DVD recorders that will resume a recording although you can record to the disk again. So, when you want to record the next video, each subsequent recording will appear as a different title on the DVD. You can give both (or all) their own titles or just leave the default titles. Most recorders have editing functions so you'd be able to erase that blank portion if it happens. To take the best advantage of that, you will want to use the rewritable DVD disks in order to gain back the space on the disk. Otherwise, you will be able to erase the blank portions but will still lose that amount of space.

We need to know if you are recording by another method than the one I mentioned.

Thanks, everyone. I'm using a Panasonic DMR-EZ37VK DVD-Recorder/VCR Combo. I just bought it, and I'm completely unfamiliar with it and the whole process.

Wish one of you lived next door. :-)
