Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I have switched to LibreOffice 3.6. I can no longer open .xls and .docs files sent from a computer with MS Office. What can I do to open those types of documents?

Thanks to all,

Steve

What happens when you try to open the file...is there an error message?

Open them with libre office and save them as .xl or .doc files to open them with older versions of office. Or it may be easier to install the Compatibility Pack.

Windows 7 versus Mint Linux :)

If you are adept enough to install a dual boot setup with Linux, you certainly know how to remove trial and ad offerings that most new PCs ship with. No 'deptitude required. The Linux MINT installer told me it detected a Windows 7 installation and asked one question - whether to preserve the other OS or kill it - and created the dual boot installation for me when I said "preserve it". If I had not resized the slider, Win7 would have had half the disk, and Mint the other half. In my previous Linux experiences, most of the distributions assassinated the existing OS without asking permission. This refinement makes Mint a good distribution for anyone who wants to keep an existing Windows setup because they have some Windows-only software. Yes, removing the bundled "crapware" is easy. But, how would you remove the LENOVO ad that LENOVO inserted into the middle of the installation procedure? Without borking the install? It was a pointy-clicky minimal intervention required kind of installation, which is not true of all Linux distros. Mint is worth posting about in areas where novices hang out . Yes, I can get Libre Office, the GIMP, and all the rest for Windows by downloading and installing them ... the point is that I didn't have to. They "came with" the OS, as usual. Unless I need to do something most users don't, such as video editing, I had not only a working OS, but a system that could do real work with no further effort. Getting more software for Linux is usually just opening the software installer and clicking "Install" in what you want. I'm not sure what you've accomplished is an improvement and not just a change. Read the threads here about browser hijacking and viruses and malware and bad links and google for zero day exploits in Windows and IE. It's definitely an improvement, and perhaps knowing there is a easy to install Linux version out there may help someone get into a safer computing environment. Or update the OS on an old machine to get a couple more years out of it? Or get the whole office on a single OS without spending oodles of money? ========== NOTE: I'm a long-time Linux fan. The last Windows OS I installed as the primary OS on a personal machine was Windows 95, although various jobs have had Windows on the office computers. I have Windows only because some software I have to run can't work under WINE.

Yes, the whole "Vista is a horrible monster" thing was way overblown. It wasn't MS's finest moment, but led to a lot of ill considered piling on. SnidelyWhiplash wrote : >>"kbarb, in that other conversation, . . . . If you want to guide that person through a conversion to Linux or a Windows upgrade, please go ahead." That desire was never expressed, neither for nor against - the person wasn't asking for any help installing an OS. The point you're trying to distract from with that sarcastic remark, is your blanket statement that any computer (hardware) with Vista (OS) isn't worth resuscitating and destined for the trash bin. It's just tendentious bad advice, for reasons afore stated. SnidelyWhiplash wrote : >>"15 year old . . . car with bald tires . . . . you'd say "Stop trying to deal with that junker and get something more reliable". Is calling the car a junker offensive?" Your analogy there is extremely exaggerated and hyperbolic, so not in useful support of your argument. Nevertheless, despite attempting to persuade someone towards what you think is a more promising direction, Yes, - saying something like that using derogatory words to someone who liked their car would be insensitive - the exact point we're trying to make. There are a myriad more considerate ways of wording things. And as mikie_gw has noted, we're getting way off track here as the OP's question is about Google Docs security and office type software suites.

computer? alternative MS office

(Apache) Open Office is a foundering project that may be about to end. Development and security efforts are reportedly grinding to a halt, not for the first time. Libre Office branched off of Open Office a few years ago. It has a very active development effort and is quite similar to OO since a few years ago the starting point was the same. Google Docs is an excellent replacement for Microsoft Office too. For the average user, there really is no "best choice". When the small numbers of things that are different and menu locations become familiar, the same utility is provided by any of them. Each of these alternatives, and a few others, will provide similar programs and capabilities and can use file formats compatible with MS Office.

I now have the paid version of MS Office but I have worked with Libre Office in the past. It may have changed since I used it a few years ago but I found it almost to be an Office clone. Very easy to work with. There are free versions of Office/Apps available on line. If you haven't seen them...check out what's available at this MS website. If these had been available when I bought my Office version...I would have opted for them rather that spending my hard earned money. :-) The only benefit I seem to have with my paid version is that I have the OEM disk in the event I ever need it. https://products.office.com/en-us/office-online/documents-spreadsheets-presentations-office-online

azinoh, I should have included this message in my first post. "Fatal Error During Installation"

bob, Thanks for the suggestion, but I am trying to get away from Office, if that is possible.
Thanks to both,
Steve

It sounds like you had a bad install of libre, I think I would remove it and redownload it and reinstall.

There's also open office which I have used for years with excellent results.

Sorry, I misread your post. The files were sent with MS Office. You weren't trying to open them with MS Office. I agree with ravencajun. Try a reinstall.

RC & Bob,
Thanks for the reply's.
I am sorta, meybee dissapointed with LibreOffice. It takes a very long time to load each time I look at my calender or any other document. This may be the perfect time to change programs...again. The next one on my list will be Openoffice.
Now, a loaded question for you two: Can I just delete LibreOffice 3.6 and install OpenOffice without loosing all the doccuments I have on the desktop and My Doc's???

You should uninstall it through the control panel add/remove option. It should not do anything with your documents.

RC & Bob,
What a painless switchover. I now have Apache Open Office.
FWI LibraOffice with Help 565,000 MB
MS Office Pro 2003 366.00 MB
Apache Open Office 314.00 MB
As you can see, I saved a lot of disk space.
Once again, thanks for your help.

I have taken most of your holiday...please allow me one more question.
I have a letter in my INBOX (Outlook Express) that has an .XLS attatchment. I can get the text from the letter just fine, when I click on the attatchment, I get this message. "The operating System is not presently configured to run this application" The sender told me it was a membership list, which probably includes names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. I am using X-P SP3.
Any and all suggestions welcome.

Well, I clicked on SAVE AS and it went to MY DOC's. I was still unable to open it from there. Same error message as before.
I e-mailed it to friend, she could open it (She uses MS Office)but could not send it back opened.
