Question re 'Checkdisk' in XP

My son has an older Dell laptop running XP Home. It has only 256 Mb of RAM and cannot be upgraded, so it is exceedingly slow. I have done everything I can think of to pare down anything that might use resources. The other night I ran "Checkdisk" prior to doing a defrag and it found some bad clusters. I had checked for it to correct or whatever. It finished the "Checkdisk" and then defragged. It does seem to run a bit faster. Later I did the "Checkdisk" again and it came up "clean volume", followed by another defrag. My question is, "What does checkdisk do about these bad sectors, and did this really help the speed, or is it my imagination?" I'd really like to know more about this, since I'm always curious about these things. As always, I'm most grateful for any information shared.
